About The Position

Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging Summer Camp environment! Lake Rickabear Day Camp sits on 332 acres of land including a beautiful 40-acre, spring-fed lake, perfect for swimming, pedal boating, paddle boarding, and row boating. The Assistant Waterfront Director will assist the Waterfront Director in all aspects of managing the lake and aquatics education program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Waterfront Director to enforce all safety rules and regulations of the waterfront in line with Girl Scouts, ACA, ARC, and NJ Youth Camp standards
  • Attend pre-camp training
  • Assist in training, directing, and assisting in supervising waterfront staff and organizing waterfront programs
  • Communicate with Waterfront Director about problems, changes, and make suggestions related to waterfront activities and personnel problems/changes
  • Integrate waterfront activities with unit plans and other specialized camp events
  • Document and diligently report any health and welfare concerns to the Camp Health Supervisor
  • Maintain proper camper-staff ratios according to outlined standards
  • Conduct opening and closing site inspection of equipment, life jackets, caps, buddy system, and swimming records
  • Manage care and use of all waterfront equipment and arrange necessary repairs
  • Collaborate with Waterfront and Program Directors to plan and conduct special waterfront events
  • Assist in conducting weekly lost swimmer rescue drills, in-service training, and staff meetings
  • Take pre- and post-camp inventory of all waterfront equipment, providing Camp Director with requests
  • Maintain cleanliness and order of waterfront and surrounding areas
  • Follow guidelines of the American Red Cross in swimming and boating instruction procedures
  • Maintain alertness for campers and staff in the water and their needs
  • Must be able to lead by example when teaching swimming lessons, lifeguarding and leading activities
  • Report any waterfront concerns to the Waterfront Director
  • Rotate lifeguards according to Waterfront Director’s discretion and expertise.
  • Carry out assignments as directed by Waterfront Director
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool, equipment, and surrounding areas
  • Assist Waterfront and Program Directors with implementation of rainy-day programs
  • Learn and perform emergency procedures effectively
  • Maintain current American Red Cross swimming skill requirements, certification requirements, and documentation of related activities
  • Promote high camper and staff morale
  • Assist in writing and submitting a seasonal report of waterfront area and activities
  • Understand and practice waterfront procedures, health, and safety
  • Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least one out of the three overnights
  • Must be able to stay at camp until the end of campfire for the overnights even if not staying for the overnight
  • Perform other duties as assigned
