About The Position

The Water Resources Intern’s role is to support Engineering in the management of water resources in the City of Eden Prairie through inspections, monitoring, and education.

Requirements

  • High school degree required; must be pursuing or have recently completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field such as engineering, biology, water resources, or environmental science.
  • Previous internship or work experience required.
  • Must have experience working independently with minimal supervision in a busy environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Experience with ArcGIS.
  • A valid Minnesota Class D Driver’s License is required for this position.
  • Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions, negotiate through rough terrain, and repeatedly lift sampling equipment and supplies (approximately 20 to 30 lbs.).
  • May include time in waders or in a boat.
  • Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City’s evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment. Pre-employment processes for this position include professional reference checks, background check, drivers license check, work verification.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the condition of the City’s stormwater system by conducting inspections of stormwater system infrastructure (stormwater ponds, wetlands, creeks, bioretention basins, inlets, and outlets), make recommendations where maintenance is needed, and collect data in Survey 1-2-3 and integrate into the City’s GIS.
  • Assist in updating the City’s stormwater system inventory by mapping water bodies and stormwater system infrastructure; reviewing construction profiles, as-built surveys, and grading plans; and gathering and compiling additional data in support of the City’s NPDES Phase II MS4 permit.
  • Assist with construction site inspections to monitor progress, document findings, and ensure conformance to engineering plans and construction standards.
  • Assist in maintaining the City's online database, PermiTrack, by entering data collected during construction inspections and documenting other NPDES Permit activities.
  • Assist in evaluations of conservation easement areas, wetland buffers, shoreland buffers, and wetland mitigation sites for compliance with City policies and ordinances.
  • Assist in administration and implementation of the City’s Vegetation Management Plan program and the Landscaping for Water Quality rebate program; assist in planting and/or maintaining biofiltration areas.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of public education initiatives and public relations materials regarding water resources in support of the City’s water resources education plan.
  • Assist consulting engineer with stormwater infrastructure evaluation by conducting field assessments and documenting and mapping water bodies and stormwater system infrastructure.
