About The Position

The Warming Center is a program operated through Glade Run Lutheran Services and provides the homeless population a warm place to stay nightly during the months of November through March. The Warming Center Staff ensures the center is managed in a way that provides safety and protection for all guests, volunteers, and facility staff, and ensures that shift operations are carried out from time of check in to time of check out. The Warming Center is in operation nightly 8:00 pm – 8:00 am (including weekends and holidays) from November 3rd to March 31st. Part-time and Full-Time Seasonal positions are available with either a five-hour (7:30 pm-12:30 am) or an eight-hour (12:00 am - 8:00 am) shift per night.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Prefer one to two years’ experience working with people who are homeless or low-income or who have issues with chemical dependency, mental health, domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
  • Knowledge of services available to low-income and homeless persons in the area through local social services agencies or the demonstrated ability to obtain such knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to appropriately assess a situation and take corrective action as necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide crisis intervention and to follow procedure in crisis situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good computer skills. Familiarity with data collection programs, Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Must be able to meet the hours of the position as listed above in the Position Summary.
  • Must be eligible for PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Clearance.
  • Must be able to identify with the agency Mission Statement and support the agency’s Core Values.
  • Hearing and vision adequate for interaction with guests, staff, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stand, sit, reach, stoop, pull, sit, and squat.
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Reasoning ability to make decisions that reflect consistency with HRDC and the Warming Center’s philosophy, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises facility activities to ensure safety of residents.
  • Enforces community expectations uniformly and consistently.
  • Conducts intake and orientation of guests.
  • Performs opening and closing duties including distributing and setting up sleeping supplies at night and cleaning up and re-collecting the previous night’s sleeping supplies in the morning.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate guest records and nightly logs both manually and using web-based and/or computer programs. Reviews past logs to remain knowledgeable and up to date on guests.
  • Respects strict code of confidentiality regarding guests and fellow staff members at all times.
  • Responds appropriately to needs and crisis situations, such as mediating basic interpersonal problems between guests and contacting emergency personnel if necessary.
  • Provides information to guests to connect with additional homeless services.
  • Provides basic crisis intervention and risk assessment for guests. Contacts additional support if needed.
  • Assists in maintaining the facility in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition.
  • Responsible for knowing and following the Warming Center’s policies and procedures.
  • Works as a team with other colleagues and volunteers on shift and is able to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Attends staff meetings and training.
  • Represents the organization professionally at all times.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively, and asking questions when clarification is needed.
  • Plans and organizes work effectively and ensures its completion.
  • Demonstrates reliability by being present for work as scheduled, arriving and leaving on time and taking breaks in expected time frames.
  • Interacts effectively with persons of diverse economic statuses, ethnic backgrounds, religious views, cultural backgrounds, and sexual orientations and treats each individual with respect and dignity.
  • Demonstrates team behavior and promotes a team-oriented environment.
  • Maintains positive relations with clients, volunteers, co-workers, staff from other agencies, agency funders, and the general public.
