About The Position

The Vice President of Human Resources & Legal (VP of HR & Legal) is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for developing and executing the human resource strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of the organization. This role will also assist in developing effective business practices as it sets employment policies, regulatory requirements, and handles legal affairs. From an HR perspective it includes overseeing the talent acquisition process, organizational development, diversity and inclusion, performance management, compliance, benefits management, and employee relations. On the legal side the focus is on protecting the Company when disputes arise and overseeing contracts and agreements that need to be signed, working with outside counsel as necessary. This in-person position is based at our Headquarters in Willowbrook, IL, but may require a small amount of travel from time to time.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school or equivalent legal experience with strong knowledge of employment law and compliance.
  • 10+ years of employment law experience
  • Proven experience negotiating employee disputes, workplace investigations, hiring/termination practices, policy administration, compliance, leaves and accommodations
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining Employee Handbooks and company policies.
  • Knowledge of compensation, organizational planning, and development.
  • Experience leading team members and direct reports.
  • Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach to execution.
  • Proactive thought process and approach to solving business needs.
  • Ability to influence and build relationships at all levels of the organization.
  • High emotional intelligence and resilience in managing change and conflict.
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of California employment law (preferred).
  • International employment law experience (preferred).
  • HR certifications such as SPHR and SHRM-SCP, or equivalent (preferred).
  • Exposure to HRIS systems (preferred – Paycom or equivalent ADP, Paylocity, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Human Resources Leadership Lead HR initiatives in talent acquisition and onboarding, leadership development, and workforce planning.
  • Lead global policy development and consistency among the different Club Champion entities in Canada, United Kingdom, & Australia – across employee handbooks, privacy policies, salary banding, contracts, background checks, onboarding protocols, and safety policies.
  • Stay up to date and ensure the Company remains in compliance with all federal, state, and local employment regulations (e.g., PTO, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, OSHA, and EEO).
  • Serve as the final escalation point for complex or high-risk employee relations matters, providing oversight, guidance, and decision authority.
  • Serve as strategic advisor to executive leadership on organizational issues and people strategies.
  • Oversee benefits, compensation banding, and incentive programs to remain competitive.
  • Foster a high-performance and employee engagement culture through effective management systems and other team building initiatives and exercises.
  • Provide and/or oversee training to management and employees as needed, including explanation of Company policies, anti-harassment training, and performance management.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the HR team, providing direction on priorities, best practices, and professional growth.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
  • Legal & Compliance Oversight Serve as the primary legal advisor to executive leadership and the board - ensuring Company policies and practices put the employees and the Company in proper compliance, including defending itself when legal matters occur.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and policies, primarily centered around employee practices.
  • First reviewer of real estate, marketing, software, privacy, and other typical business contracts and agreements.
  • Coordinate and manage outside counsel and legal service providers.
  • Investigate and/or oversee investigation of employee complaints or reported violations of Company policies.
  • Oversee change management initiatives and organizational restructuring efforts.
