About The Position

The Volunteer & Salvage Coordinator plays a critical dual role in advancing Treasure Coast Food Bank’s mission to alleviate hunger by overseeing volunteer engagement and managing salvage operations within the warehouse environment. This position ensures that donated food and essential products are properly received, inspected, sorted, processed, tracked, and redistributed in accordance with Feeding America, OSHA, AIB International, Florida Association of Food Banks (FAFB), and Treasure Coast Food Bank standards. The coordinator is responsible for cultivating and managing volunteer participation while maintaining operational excellence in the salvage area. This role combines leadership, logistics coordination, compliance oversight, food safety enforcement, and inventory management to maximize product recovery, minimize waste, and ensure a safe and efficient warehouse environment. As Volunteer & Salvage Coordinator, you will lead daily salvage operations and volunteer engagement activities to ensure millions of pounds of food are processed safely and efficiently for community distribution. You will train, supervise, and recognize volunteers while coordinating warehouse sorting, packing, special events, and mobile distributions. You will oversee product inspection and quality control processes, maintain inventory accuracy in Primarius, enforce FIFO procedures, monitor compliance with food safety and regulatory standards, and collaborate with Operations and Community Relations leadership to ensure seamless coordination. Through strong leadership and attention to detail, you will protect product integrity, reduce waste, and deliver a meaningful volunteer experience that strengthens community engagement.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and inventory software systems.
  • Ability to apply basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Ability to operate warehouse equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, dollies, and scales.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain forklift certification within 90 days.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated sound judgement, impartiality, and discretion.
  • Ability to promptly communicate operational concerns to prevent loss or risk.
  • Flexibility to work pre-scheduled evenings and weekends as required.
  • Commitment to serving vulnerable populations and advancing hunger relief.

Responsibilities

  • Train and supervise individual, corporate, school, faith-based, and community volunteers.
  • Coordinate and organize daily volunteer activities including warehouse sorting, mobile distributions, box builds, and special events.
  • Establish measurable goals for volunteer growth and engagement.
  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours and activities for reporting and grant documentation.
  • Enforce volunteer policies and procedures to ensure a safe, productive environment.
  • Provide weekly reporting to leadership on volunteer hours, pounds sorted, boxes built, and related metrics.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Warehouse leadership to coordinate volunteer readiness prior to arrival.
  • Receive and process center donations, including sorting, categorizing, rotating, labeling, weighing, and storing products.
  • Direct the movement of perishable and non-perishable salvage into designated sorting areas.
  • Perform and oversee inspection of products using visual inspection and blue light to detect contamination, infestation, spoilage, or expiration.
  • Accept or reject products based on established safety and quality standards.
  • Conduct quality control audits and final inspection of outgoing salvage boxes.
  • Monitor and enforce FIFO procedures.
  • Ensure proper inspection, handling, storage, and distribution of inventory in compliance with Feeding America, OSHA, AIB International, FAFB, and TCFB standards.
  • Maintain pest control logs and conduct routine salvage area inspections for cleanliness and compliance.
  • Perform and oversee cleaning and sanitizing of salvage areas, including completion of cleaning logs.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records of all products received and processed.
  • Utilize Primarius inventory software to transform products and ensure inventory accuracy.
  • Track product levels and communicate slow-moving or uncategorized inventory to Inventory Control leadership.
  • Maintain logs for product transformations, waste, and applicable compliance documentation.
  • Assist in audit preparation and ensure accurate documentation for internal and external reviews.
  • Operate warehouse equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, dollies, and scales.
  • Obtain and maintain forklift certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Conduct equipment inspections and report malfunctions to Operations leadership.
  • Assist with layout optimization of salvage areas to maximize dry and cooled storage space.
  • Identify operational efficiencies and cost-reduction opportunities in coordination with Operations leadership.
  • Confer with Volunteer Manager and Operations leadership to coordinate scheduling and maximize workflow efficiency.
  • Support planning and execution of warehouse events and distribution activities.
  • Represent Treasure Coast Food Bank in a professional manner during volunteer and community interactions.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned in support of program operations and organizational goals.
