The VMware Infrastructure Engineer is a member of a skilled IT team responsible for designing, operating, and evolving the virtualized infrastructure that underpins a rapidly scaling intelligence application. This role supports both steady-state operations and modernization initiatives, including the planned transition from traditional virtual machine–based deployments to containerized platforms such as Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift. This role will be at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA. The VMware Infrastructure Engineer performs system integration and infrastructure engineering activities that include virtualization design, capacity planning, system analysis, testing, documentation, and operational support. The role provides direct support to development, security, and operations teams, collaborates with technical writers and testers, manages configuration baselines, and ensures system reliability through disciplined change management and patching practices. Source control and configuration management tools are used to track infrastructure changes and maintain system integrity across environments. This position is responsible for architecting, deploying, and maintaining VMware-based environments, including compute, storage, and networking components, in support of mission applications operating across multiple IC networks. The engineer designs scalable, resilient virtual infrastructure, performs upgrades and lifecycle management of VMware platforms, and troubleshoots performance and availability issues. Documentation of infrastructure administration procedures—including provisioning, scaling, backup, recovery, and decommissioning—is an essential responsibility. In addition to core VMware operations, the engineer actively supports platform modernization efforts by enabling container-ready infrastructure and hybrid architectures. This includes preparing virtual environments for container platforms, integrating virtualization with DevSecOps pipelines, and supporting the migration of workloads from virtual machines to containerized deployments. The role works closely with application and DevSecOps teams to ensure VMware environments can serve as a stable foundation for Kubernetes and OpenShift adoption, including networking, storage, and security integrations required for container orchestration platforms.
