About The Position

The summer project will focus on experimental studies of molten salt systems for advanced nuclear applications. The intern will assist with laboratory measurements of key thermophysical and chemical properties, including heat capacity, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, species solubility, and salt purification/cleanup processes. In addition, the intern will develop a proposal to apply synchrotron-based techniques to determine coordination environments and speciation of key elements in molten salt systems, linking local structure to chemical reactivity and macroscopic properties.

Requirements

  • The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States.
  • Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution
  • Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or
  • Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution

Responsibilities

  • Assist with laboratory measurements of key thermophysical and chemical properties, including heat capacity, density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, species solubility, and salt purification/cleanup processes.
  • Develop a proposal to apply synchrotron-based techniques to determine coordination environments and speciation of key elements in molten salt systems, linking local structure to chemical reactivity and macroscopic properties.
