About The Position

Oversees transplant services across UPMC. Develops and executes transplant strategy in concert with the transplant oversight committee. Leads the transplant oversight committee. This includes representatives from UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Hamot, and the Central Region. In addition, specifically manages and administer all aspects of solid organ transplantation at UPMC Presbyterian including: abdominal transplant (Starzl Transplantation Institute), cardio-thoracic transplant, pediatric transplant, the Organ Referral Center, and the Liver Cancer Center. These functions include daily management of transplant operations, fiscal management, short and long range planning, marketing, and community relations. Serve as the liaison for UPMC Presbyterian to the local Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), Core, outside OPOs, UNOS, and other external organizations. Work collaboratively with the physician and nursing teams within and outside of UPMC.

Requirements

Master's degree in Business or related field required.
5 years of healthcare administration experience with operational management, business planning and supervisory experience required.
Knowledge of 3rd party billing and reimbursement, and Microsoft Office with advanced Excel skills required.

Nice To Haves

Experience in grant or contract administration, accounting systems, information systems, financial reporting and internal controls (auditing) preferred.
Transplant management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Formulate strategic assessments and provide improvements in Transplant service across UPMC and develop plans for expansion of Transplant service. Advise the UPMC Executive Management Team and give guidance regarding critical issues and strategic direction.
Oversee/conduct comprehensive operational analyses and provide consulting services to Transplant in order to develop solutions focused on cost and efficiency optimization.
Oversee data-gathering systems in all Transplant departments/practice plans for patient care documentation and service delivery, productivity and utilization, evaluation and planning, and management decision-making activities. Recommends methods for improvement in performance against standards.
Develop and oversee budget for all Transplant services. Oversee preparation of the annual hospital and private practice operations budget (i.e., clinical practice plan, hospital, SOM and research); Oversee financial reporting used to monitor and analyze performance against goals.
Serve as a resource for Transplant, developing strategies to maximize reimbursement. Oversee statistical analysis of patient utilization, accounts receivable, third party reimbursement, and any other detailed analysis required by the President, Division Chief, etc.
Manage partnership with Clinical, Administrative and Information Services staff to identify opportunities for improving cost and quality of care through in-depth process and cost of care analysis, forming recommendations to drive significant operational changes.
Assist with Medicare Cost Report issues as it relates to transplantation.
Assist in the development of grant proposals to secure outside funding for transplant related activities.
Assumes responsibility for all activities related to the purpose and administration of the UMPC Adult and Pediatric Transplant Programs. Initiates, organizes, plans and directs adult and pediatric transplant organization functions.
Oversees personnel practices including recruitment, orientation, training, retention and performance management of staff within the division.
Serve as liaison between Transplant and the various business areas of UPP, Inc. including but not limited to the Central Billing Office, Central Scheduling and Registration and Compliance.
Ensure compliance with state, federal and other regulatory requirements and with various UNOS regulations and guidelines.
Monitor Transplant performance to ensure compliance with internal and external policies and procedures. Recommends changes and innovations as appropriate.
Ensure dissemination of regulatory information across the service line pertaining to changes in reimbursement and/or coding while ensuring regulatory compliance.
Maintain effective public relations programs for the service line. Coordinate public awareness events, outreach programs and development of various public awareness campaigns such as Organ Donor Awareness week.
Represent UPMC Transplant Programs as the liaison and spokesperson with other organizations and community groups and in dealing with outside agencies. Attend UNOS Local, Regional and National Meeting and participate on appropriate committees.
Serve as a liaison with UPMC Presbyterian's local OPO, Core, and other OPOs in the nation. Serve as an active member of the Organ Donor Committee within UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
Maintain professional affiliations and enhance professional development to keep pace with trends in health care administration.
