About The Position

The American College of Physicians (ACP) is seeking a Vice President for its Publishing Division. ACP, a national organization of internal medicine physicians with headquarters in Philadelphia, is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States with more than 162,000 members worldwide. This is a hybrid position with 2 days per week in the Philadelphia office required. Reporting to and working in close collaboration with the Chief Publishing Officer, the Vice President is responsible for the strategic development, execution, and overall performance of ACP’s publishing portfolio, including journals, books, magazines, podcasts, videos, webinars, apps, AI-based solutions, and point-of-care and literature surveillance resources. The Vice President plays a critical role in advancing ACP’s mission by increasing the value, reach, impact, and revenue of its publications for members, customers, and digital audiences. The Vice President provides strategic and operational leadership for digital publishing strategy and product development, overseeing innovation across ACP’s publishing platforms and formats. This position leads the vision, planning, and execution of new and enhanced publishing products and services, integrating emerging technologies such as AI and modern UX/UI practices to improve user experience, discoverability, and engagement. The Vice President is a big-picture thinker with strong business acumen who thrives in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment and inspires teams to deliver high-quality, industry-leading publishing solutions. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or extensive related required; advanced degree preferred, with at least 10 years of progressive management experience, preferably in scholarly or trade journal publishing
  • Demonstrated success leading digital publishing, product development, and technology-enabled initiatives within a complex organization
  • Deep knowledge of digital publishing technologies, platforms, and workflows, including web and mobile products, AI tools, CMSs, XML/HTML/JATS, and agile product management methodologies
  • Familiarity with medical taxonomies, semantic enrichment technologies, content discovery, analytics, licensing, permissions, and domestic and international medical markets
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including experience with budgeting, pricing, contracts, forecasting, P&L responsibility, and launching profitable, high-impact products
  • Proven ability to define and execute product strategies and roadmaps, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results on time and within budget
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to interpret data from multiple sources to inform strategic decisions
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative leadership style and the ability to build consensus across diverse stakeholders

Responsibilities

  • Providing strategic leadership for ACP’s publishing products and digital initiatives, including journals, magazines, books, and emerging digital and AI-enabled offerings
  • Leading teams, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance management
  • Developing and executing a comprehensive digital publishing and product strategy aligned with ACP’s strategic plan, with a focus on revenue growth, audience engagement, market expansion, and long-term sustainability
  • Overseeing product development across the full life cycle while defining KPIs and using analytics to measure performance and ROI
  • Driving SEO and GAIO strategies to optimize discoverability across search engines and large language models (LLMs)
  • Identifying, evaluating, and integrating AI tools and technologies into publishing workflows and products, while establishing and enforcing ethical AI policies that ensure fairness, transparency, and data privacy
  • Managing budgets, forecasting, and financial performance for assigned publishing activities, ensuring fiscal responsibility and profitability
  • Negotiating and managing vendor relationships and contracts related to hosting, product development, composition, tagging, and other publishing services
  • Ensuring publishing products meet or exceed industry standards and best practices, including applicable NISO and STM standards
  • Leading complex, concurrent projects and communicating progress, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership and key stakeholders through presentations and regular updates
