About The Position

AssetMark is seeking a Vice President, Head of Platform Engineering, to lead the continuing development of our foundational technology platform. Reporting to the SVP, Head of Product Engineering, this senior leadership role will be responsible for building and leading a team of 50+ engineers focused on creating a robust, scalable, and secure horizontal platform of services and APIs that will underpin our entire product estate. The ideal candidate is a seasoned engineering leader with a proven track record of designing and implementing enterprise-scale platform architectures. This role requires a strategic visionary who can establish platform engineering as a core discipline within our organization while developing canonical source-of-truth data systems that enable seamless integration across our wealth management solutions. Working closely with our Head of Platform Product counterpart and our Head of Data Platform Engineering, you will drive the technical vision, architecture, and continued build-out of a centralized platform strategy that accelerates product development, ensures data integrity, and creates a foundation for future innovation and growth. We can consider candidates for this position who are able to accommodate a hybrid work schedule and are close to our Charlotte, NC or Concord, CA office.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in designing and implementing API-first, service-oriented architectures
  • Extensive experience with data modeling, master data management, and enterprise data governance
  • Strong background in cloud-native architectures, microservices, event-driven systems, and modern development practices
  • Track record of successfully transforming legacy systems into modern, scalable platform architectures
  • Expertise in establishing engineering excellence through standardization, automation, and best practices
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code principles
  • Proven experience building and leading large engineering teams (40+ engineers) in enterprise environments
  • Experience implementing technology platforms in regulated industries, preferably in financial services
  • 15+ years of software engineering experience with at least 8+ years in platform engineering leadership roles
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Strategic vision with ability to translate business needs into technology platforms
  • Exceptional people leadership skills with demonstrated success building and scaling high-performing engineering organizations
  • Strong executive presence and communication skills with ability to influence across all levels of the organization
  • Collaborative approach to working with product management and other technology leaders
  • Proven change management skills and ability to drive organizational transformation
  • Decisive problem-solving with pragmatic approach to balancing short-term needs with long-term architecture goals

Responsibilities

  • Platform Vision & Strategy: Define and execute the technical vision for AssetMark's enterprise platform architecture, including services, APIs, data models, and integration patterns
  • Team Leadership: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing engineering organization of 40-50+ engineers focused on platform development and data management
  • Technology Modernization: Transform our technology infrastructure into a modern, API-first platform that enables rapid product development and seamless integration
  • Data Architecture: Establish and safeguard canonical source-of-truth data systems and governance policies on top of Snowflake across the enterprise in conjunction with our Data Engineering team
  • Enterprise Integration: Design and implement standardized patterns for service integration, data exchange, and cross-application workflows
  • Technical Standards: Develop comprehensive technical standards, best practices, and reference architectures for platform components
  • API Governance: Create and enforce API design principles, versioning strategies, and governance models that enable controlled evolution of the platform
  • Security & Compliance: Ensure platform architecture meets stringent security, compliance, and regulatory requirements for financial services
  • Technology Partnership: Collaborate closely with the Head of Platform Product and the Head of Data Platform Engineering to align technical capabilities with business objectives and product roadmaps
  • Cross-Team Enablement: Partner with product application engineering teams to facilitate adoption of platform services and APIs while providing guidance on implementation
  • Performance & Scalability: Design systems that meet stringent performance requirements and can scale to support business growth
  • Innovation Leadership: Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to identify opportunities for platform innovation
  • Cultural Transformation: Help further our journey to becoming a world class engineering team backed by industry best practices for engineering
