The New York Times is looking for a creative, highly organized Social Video Editor to join our fast-growing NYT Cooking social media and video teams. In this role, you will be responsible for editing, shaping and elevating our short-form, vertical video content on-site and across platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. You will drive our ambitious production goals by turning around dozens of snappy videos each week, while simultaneously pioneering the look and feel of our new vertical series to make each one stand out. The ideal candidate has a meticulous eye for detail, a deep understanding of vertical video pacing and a genuine passion for food and culinary storytelling. You know exactly what makes a recipe demo pop on a crowded timeline, and you are comfortable working in a fast-paced newsroom environment. You will collaborate closely with our roster of on-camera talent, recipe developers and social media editors to ensure our work remains culturally relevant, smart and helpful to our viewers. This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience editing vertical video for digital and social platforms, ideally for a lifestyle or food media company.
  • Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite video editing tools, as well as in-app editing tools (TikTok, Instagram).
  • Highly organized and comfortable working on tight, demanding deadlines while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience working with freelance video editors and completing passback edits.

Nice To Haves

  • A strong understanding of the distinct visual languages of different social platforms.
  • Previous experience editing food or recipe-driven videos, and functional cooking and food styling knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of video graphics and experience using Adobe After Effects.
  • A background in journalism or an understanding of editorial standards and practices.
  • A deep passion for food, cooking and the mission of The New York Times.

Responsibilities

  • Edit a high volume of engaging, short-form videos designed to maximize views on social platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube) and funnel new audiences to the NYT Cooking app, website, newsletters and other properties.
  • Shape raw footage into compelling, cohesive narratives that hook the viewer in the first few seconds and drive platform engagement.
  • Work with producers, social media editors and talent to iterate on feedback and meet tight publishing deadlines.
  • Take first-pass edits from freelance video editors to the finish line, adding burned-in captions to every video and ensuring graphics, audio and editing meet the visual standards of NYT Cooking.
  • Review video performance metrics in partnership with the data and audience teams to continuously refine our social video strategy.
  • Maintain broad knowledge of the social media landscape and be aware of new platform trends as they change.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
