About The Position

Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace. Directs the activities necessary to maintain and repair light vehicle and heavy equipment assets of the United States Antarctic Program. Sets deadlines and establishes the sequence of work operations to be followed; maintains balanced workloads by shifting assignments, workers, and other resources to achieve the most effective work operations. Reviews and analyzes work accomplishments, cost, and utilization of subordinates to evaluate work progress, control costs, and anticipate and avoid possible problems by recommending corrective action to upper level management personnel. Ensures all employees are trained for the specific task assigned. Manages budget and remains within parameters. Supervises the work of all mechanics, skilled and unskilled labor engaged in the repair and upkeep of USAP Capital Equipment and ensures vehicles and equipment are maintained in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and industry standards. Determines annual re-supply requirements and ensures all requisitions are submitted in accordance with schedules, guidelines and policies in order to meet shipping deadlines for annual supply vessel delivery. Interviews and makes recommendations for hiring to meet staffing needs Monitors all work in-progress to ensure quality, timely completion and control of material. Provides labor and material support to USAP field camps and other stations as directed. Performs follow up inspections as required on equipment. Documents work order progress, maintains records of shop activities and prepares and submits reports as requested. Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management guidelines and policies. Provides training and orientation for subordinate employees on performance, documentation and activities that affect the achievement of Operations Division metrics. Accurately and completely tracks all data related to Operation Division metrics. Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals and provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation. Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Two years training at a technical school
  • Minimum of eight years’ experience in vehicle maintenance
  • Minimum of three years of experience at a supervisor level
  • Solid knowledge of mechanical theory applying to commercial and special purpose design vehicles and equipment, using lubricants and tools, methods of hoisting and handling heavy mechanisms, internal combustion engines and electrical and hydraulics systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in management of personnel and tasking prioritization
  • Intermediate level computer skills
  • Proficient in risk and hazard assessment and safety standards
  • Proficient providing leadership and acting as a role model
  • Ability to quickly learn and utilize computer-based labor, inventory and maintenance tracking applications.
  • Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problems
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance and/or fleet management experience
  • Experience with Maximo preferred
