Hourly Pay rate: $41.04 - Per Union Contract Description: This position supervises, instructs, and trains technical personnel involved in the maintenance, repair, and servicing of transit-related vehicles, as well as directs the daily activities of technical personnel. This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two years in a supervisory role, or at least four years in a verifiable lead position demonstrating effective leadership capabilities.
  • Completion of at least 60 college credit hours in a relevant field such as vehicle maintenance, mechanical/electrical engineering, public or business administration, or a closely related discipline.
  • Alternatively, an additional two years of supervisory experience (totaling four years) may substitute for the college coursework.
  • At least five years of hands-on experience in transit vehicle maintenance, heavy-duty vehicle or equipment repair and overhaul, or a closely related technical field.
  • Must have a valid Florida CDL Class “B” license with airbrakes and a passenger endorsement.
  • Must possess and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Must pass a DOT physical examination and drug screen and maintain a valid medical examiner’s certificate.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Must become familiar with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Maintenance Guide to Daily Operations and Work Rules, and LYNX administrative rules, policies, and procedures within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution in vehicle maintenance, mechanical/electrical engineering, public/business administration, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in bus and mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to transit maintenance and the Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA).
  • Ability to execute preventive maintenance plans for mobile/non-mobile equipment.

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and make decisions about shift work prioritization.
  • Ability to continually multi-task and prioritize work, meeting schedules, and deadlines.
  • MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); ability to navigate the Internet and Intranet to gain information or process web-based forms; and ability to learn and effectively operate new computer hardware, software, and other technologies implemented by LYNX.
  • Ability to prepare and edit clear and concise written reports.
  • Ability to work under stress and interruptions.
  • Ability to locate, define, and repair defects in a wide variety of general or specialized transit equipment.
  • Ability to learn to use and effectively operate new computer hardware, software, and other technologies as implemented by LYNX.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the activities of all mechanical and technical maintenance personnel to ensure they are being productive, and the transit fleet is fully operable and ready to meet service requirements.
  • Coordinates work activities and coverage for the assigned shift; assigns overtime according to established procedures; prepares and prioritizes work and work orders; conducts oversight and provides detailed technical assistance and/or instructions.
  • Interacts, communicates, and coordinates with management and all bargaining and non-bargaining personnel to meet service needs.
  • Communicates and coordinates with the other maintenance shop shifts as another shift transitions on to provide detailed information regarding remaining work, work plans, scheduled repairs, and projects.
  • Interacts and effectively communicates with other departments to meet service needs.
  • Reviews shift work orders, PM’s, follow-up forms, and electronic timecards for proper labor coding, accuracy, completeness, and comments; closes out work orders that are in a work completed status; and updates all Maintenance Status Logs.
  • Opens Electronic Work Orders; monitors and evaluates work in progress for timeliness and quality of repair efforts; ensures all jobs are executed according to industry repair standards and that all units released to the Transportation Department are clean and safe for service.
  • Maintains a variety of computerized records and prepares reports of work performed, materials used, fuel usage, daily reports, and work orders.
  • Identifies breakdown trends and fleet defects.
  • Makes decisions regarding vehicle safety; consults with Training, the Manager(s) of Maintenance, and the Safety Officer(s) for guidance as necessary.
  • Maintains the shop and work area in a safe, organized, and clean manner and ensures the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in all designated areas.
  • Instructs/demonstrates the proper and safe use of tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ensures all maintenance personnel are adhering to all maintenance work rules, organizational policies, and organizational safety rules and regulations.
  • Provides leadership, enthusiasm, and a “can-do” attitude in order to ensure the success of the Maintenance Department.
  • Advises Manager of Maintenance of equipment, tools, and material needs within the department.
  • Administers appropriate action concerning equipment and vehicles, and personnel problems; and communicates extreme conditions to the Manager(s) of Maintenance.
  • Prepares and administers appropriate personnel actions (i.e. disciplinary actions, completes performance and probationary evaluations and training and development recommendations).
  • Executes departmental and personnel goals and objectives.
  • Regular and reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the position.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
