About The Position

This position functions at or above the journey level and is responsible for highly technical troubleshooting repair and maintenance of equipment used to support the Division of State Historic Sites. This position is responsible for training, advising and overseeing the work of various site staff as their duties relate to equipment maintenance and service. This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing the Craftsman motor fleet and all site vehicles, tractors, mowers and lawn equipment. Employees in this unit are required to achieve and maintain a higher-than-normal level of expertise, especially when addressing maintenance issues of the vehicle and equipment needs supporting historic structure maintenance or repair.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
  • two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, OR a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid NC Class A CDL license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must have the ability to follow verbal and written project directions and to work independently as needed.
  • Must be available to work the schedule of Monday - Thursday 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical work for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 100 lbs periodically and 50 lbs consistently with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks and movements associated with trade work.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions throughout the year with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of estimating parts and labor hours needed for all aspects equipment and vehicle repair.
  • Thorough understanding of vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Experience in the automotive mechanical or equipment repair trade or an equivalent vocation.
  • Computer proficiency with the ability to utilize Workday, Fiori and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, driving dump trucks, trailering heavy equipment, driving and operating a rollback tow truck.
  • Experience in welding and metal fabrication

Responsibilities

  • Diagnosing and repairing of a variety of mechanical equipment; 2 and 4 stroke gasoline engines and diesel engines and small motor driven equipment.
  • Diagnosing and repairing equipment sub-systems such as pneumatic, hydraulic, activation and DC distribution systems.
  • Diagnosing automotive air conditioning systems, electrical systems, braking systems whether pneumatic, hydraulic or electric.
  • Diagnosing and repairing transmission / drive train systems.
  • Managing a statewide fleet of division equipment including but not limited to backhoes, tractors, lawn equipment, diesel- and gas-powered trucks, trailers, dump trucks.
  • Directing and training staff in proper operation and maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Position is responsible for the transport of disabled equipment to repair shop.
  • Position is responsible for the operation and transport of all heavy equipment such as a backhoe - loader, skid steer and tractors.
