About The Position

This position is for a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II (VERT II) in the Avery County Equipment Shop located within Division Eleven. This position is skilled mechanic work. Position in this class perform skilled small engine, automotive, and/or heavy equipment repair. Work includes performance of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work ranges from inspection and service to highly complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; conducting parts/systems failure analysis; and the calibration, adjustment and operation of engine analyzers. Work requires experience in welding and steel fabrication/machining. Positions in this class may perform skilled work in the straightening and replacing of automotive bodies, fenders, panels and related parts. Vehicle body work is performed in accordance with standard automotive body repair practices. Position must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system and ancillary components/equipment. Employee in this classification performs a variety of recurring and non-recurring work such as electrical, suspension, brake system repair, and /or fitting and repairing more complex ancillary and specialized equipment. The extent of repair work to be done may require consultation with a higher-level technician or a supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
  • Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanics tools.
  • Safety toe shoes required.
  • Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and pick-up truck as needed.
  • Applicant must either be in possession of a current Class “A” CDL with “N” endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License and endorsement must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required.
  • As a condition of employment, a Release form ALCDRG-01, Background Statement ALCDRG-06, and Testing Notification Form (ALCDRG-07) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
  • Experience of air intake systems including diagnosis and repair of turbo systems
  • Knowledge of basic welding principles and application
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components
  • Knowledge of diagnostic software, tools and equipment for trucks and heavy equipment
