About The Position

Internal Posting – Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a temporary full-time, temporary part-time, permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply. This position will serve as a lead worker and perform semi-skilled and skilled small engine, automotive, heavy equipment and/or tire repair work. Assist as a fill on for the shop supervisor in his absence. Employees perform a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work ranges from inspection and service to highly complex mechanical and electrical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; conducting parts/systems failure analysis; and the calibration, adjustment and operation of engine diatonic tools. Standard operational guidelines, shop safety procedures, vendor manuals and manufacturer publications and bulletins are normally established and employees apply technical knowledge and skills, occasionally modifying standard practice and procedures due to unusual situations. Employees must routinely determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish work assignments, oftentimes in the capacity of a team lead role with limited to no direct supervision. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system and ancillary components/equipment. Assignments are normally received in the form of written or verbal work orders, which usually indicate the general nature of the task or describe the nature of the problem. New or unusual assignments may be accompanied by more detailed instructions. Work is performed under general supervision and may be reviewed and inspected in progress or upon completion. This position is located in Lincoln County Equipment Shop. Applications must be received no later than 11:59 pm on the closing date of posting.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow instructions, to apply techniques, principles, and methods involved in determining and solving basic mechanical problems.
  • Ability to use a variety of tools, instruments, and machines found in automotive/equipment shop, ability to diagnose and provide service/repairs/replacements to basic vehicular equipment.
  • Ability to work in an indoor/outdoor environment.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License required.
  • NCDOT requires the employee to obtain NC CDL, Class "A" permit with "N" endorsement within 60 days of hire date & a valid NC CDL license within 90 days of hire date. Continued employment is contingent upon possession of a valid CDL license.
  • Pre-employment drug testing may be required for this position.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) & a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed & signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the last two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year- for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Heating and A/C repairs including electronic and vacuum controls
  • Experience in performing electrical/electronic diagnosis and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment
  • Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of two of the following: light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components
  • Experience in troubleshooting complex electrical/electronic systems
