About The Position

Undergraduate Research Assistant is responsible for assisting a post-doctoral fellow in culturing non-pathogenic bacterial strains, isolation and purification of small molecules and structural analysis The undergraduate researcher is expected to be familiarized with standard aseptic procedures in handling bacterial strains, various column chromatography techniques and HPLC . In addition to research activities, following are required: Documenting protocols, keeping lab notebook records upto date, summarizing results in written format weekly and monthly presentation in support of the research activities. The research activity is intended to provide the opportunity to learn as to how to conduct biomedical research and prepare the students for future graduate research upon UG completion.

Requirements

  • Current enrolment in the undergraduate Chemistry at the Univ. of Utah is essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in synthetic organic chemistry is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples for various non-pathogenic bacterial strains
  • Use aseptic lab techniques in daily work
  • Maintain media and reagents as needed for various bacterial culture conditions
  • Inventory and report expendable supplies/materials needed
  • Provide routine preventive maintenance by daily cleaning, sanitizing, and trash disposal
  • Perform quality control monitoring by taking incubator temperatures, inoculating bacterial strains, running media controls, performing control experiments
  • Maintain laboratory condition, to include equipment, supplies, and accurate records throughout all experiments
  • Perform all activities in a neat, safe, hygienic, and efficient manner
  • Maintain lab notebooks, updated daily and prepare ppt slide for monthly presentation as well as providing weekly summary report
  • Assisting with managing priorities and schedule such that individual goals as well as project goals are achieved
  • Participation in the publication and presentation at conferences/meetings
  • Responsible for the safety of oneself and others working within their area
  • Responsible for the completion of required microbiology training/certification
  • Meets with faculty supervisor on regular basis to maintain ongoing communication regarding the progress and performance.
