Job Summary The Utility Systems Training Lead is a senior leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive training programs for operators in a high-reliability industrial utility plant environment. This position ensures that all personnel achieve and maintain the highest standards of operational proficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance across critical utility systems. The Training Lead personally maintains active qualification on key watch stations to provide hands-on mentorship and leadership by example. In addition to primary training responsibilities, the incumbent will occasionally cover operational shifts to support plant reliability and flexibility. To ensure continuity of services, this position will require emergency response to maintain continuity of utility services to the site. The candidate filling this role will be considered critical/essential personnel.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical or Mechanical) or a related technical field. Combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • CT state OE2 license or the ability to obtain one within a year of service.
  • 10 years’ experience in power plant operations with at least 5 years in a supervisory position.
  • In-depth knowledge of power plant operations and administration.
  • Ability to research technical requirements, read and interpret technical drawings and flow diagrams, and apply regulatory restrictions, ensuring training materials are accurate and up to date.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, effective communication, and the ability to make rapid decisions under pressure during emergency situations.
  • Ability to obtain a security access badge at our client’s location.
  • Ability to obtain an appropriate driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, as requested.
  • Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident. This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with heavy industrial or manufacturing plant steam systems, centrifugal chillers, air handling units, cooling towers, air compressors, air dryers, heat exchangers, exhaust systems, pneumatic controls, and building automation control systems.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); EAMS experience is a plus.
  • Experience interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Training Program Development and Implementation - Design, develop, and deliver structured initial qualification and continuing training programs customized to the site’s specific utility systems. Key areas of focus include: Safe and efficient operation of dual-fuel 600 psig industrial steam boilers and associated site steam distribution controlled via the Delta V Distributed Control System (DCS). Operation of gas turbine generators and Waste Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), including startup, shutdown, and performance optimization. Electrical power generation, distribution, switching, and protective relaying systems. Nitrogen generation, bulk delivery, storage, and distribution systems. Design, operation, and troubleshooting of steam, condensate, feedwater, and ancillary systems. Steam plant water chemistry, treatment, monitoring, and corrosion control practices. Regulatory compliance requirements, including environmental, safety, and operational standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, ASME, and site-specific permits). Recognition, response, and mitigation of abnormal events, system failures, and emergency procedures. Chiller plant operations, including centrifugal/absorption chillers, cooling towers, chilled water distribution, pumps, controls, and energy-efficient operation.
  • Oversee the management of apprentice programs Support the licensing/certification of new operators within one year of hire, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and organizational objectives.
  • Qualification and Performance Management Monitor trainee progress through structured evaluations, job performance measures (JPMs), and practical assessments. Verify that operators consistently meet rigorous safety, technical, and operational competency standards before independent qualification.
  • Proficiency Maintenance and Standards Development Establish and enforce ongoing proficiency requirements, requalification schedules, and skill enhancement initiatives to sustain exceptional performance levels among experienced operators. Develop refresher training modules, simulations, and drills to address evolving technologies, procedures, and lessons learned.
  • Operational Readiness and Hands-On Leadership Personally qualify and maintain active proficiency on all assigned watch stations and critical operational roles. Serve as a subject matter expert and provide direct, hands-on guidance during training evolutions, complex evolutions, and real-time operations.
  • Emergency Response Role Function as a key member of the site emergency response team, maintaining readiness to respond to plant-wide emergencies within required timeframes. Participate in drills, incident command activities, and post-event reviews to enhance organizational resilience.
  • Operational Support Flexibility From time to time, cover operational shifts in a hands-on capacity to ensure continuity of plant operations, support staffing needs, or provide leadership during high-demand periods, outages, or emergencies.
  • Safety and Compliance Leadership Perform all duties in strict adherence to company safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work permitting, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Promote a strong safety culture through training, coaching, and example.
  • Other Duties Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by management to support overall plant success and continuous improvement.
