The Team The Upper School Faculty are a collaborative and forward-thinking community of education professionals who are consistently looking for ways to create real-world, project-based experiences that help their students connect content in a relevant and impactful way. This team models what it means to be inquisitive, nurturing, flexible, and creative. While they customize and personalize the learning for each course, this team is united in using an inquiry-based model and a mastery approach to teaching. The Role Mount Vernon School seeks an innovative and collaborative Upper School Science teacher with experience teaching in student-centered environments. Mount Vernon teaches foundational science courses through unique 9-week modules such as Biotechnology, Medicinal Chemistry, and Rocketry. Ideal candidates will have a background in several sciences and use a project-based/competency-based approach to instruction and assessment. Availability to sponsor athletic, artistic, or academic teams/clubs is preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, education, or a related field
  • Classroom teaching experience (3+ years preferred)
  • Proficiency with technological tools and platforms

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching high school students in an independent school setting (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Provide meaningful instruction in Grades 9-12 Science using a variety of research-based and innovative teaching methods
  • Create well-planned nine-week units that connect students to the real-world learning opportunities
  • Create differentiated lessons to match the needs of each student in the classroom
  • Timely maintenance of accurate and comprehensive records of each student's performance and progress & communication with students/families pertaining to progress
  • Care and nurture for the social and emotional needs of each student
  • Maintenance of an organized, inviting, and student-centered learning environment
  • Participation in duties (e.g. lunch, enrichment and carpool) and others as assigned
  • Possess strong character with an absolute drive for excellence, a team-oriented spirit, and a commitment to meeting the learning and social-emotional needs of students
