About The Position

Writing consultants have the opportunity to hold interactive writing appointments with student writers from all disciplines on various writing projects such as essays, speeches, proposals, multimodal projects, etc. Consultants must understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays along with essay knowledge. Writing consultants should have a good understanding of grammar and mechanics as well. Knowledge in various rhetorical modes and types (e.g. literary reviews, analyses, blogs, websites, presentations, etc....) is beneficial. Consultants will develop key skills such as communication, cooperation, and leadership. Consultants will also have the opportunity to specialize in types of writing and citation styles. Students will complete and submit bi-weekly timesheets. Positions may be filled based on individual applicants' skills, qualifications, and departmental needs. Adheres to all department and University policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of EH 101 & 102 (or equivalent course) with a grade of A.
  • A working knowledge of the writing process and various rhetorical styles.
  • Familiarity in locating and documenting reliable and credible sources.
  • Familiarity with MLA/APA citation styles. Other styles are a bonus.
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. )
  • If not a first-time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU.

  • Knowledge of University General Information.
  • Relevant academic, computer, and/or administrative skills needed for the position.
  • Knowledge in various rhetorical modes and types (e.g. literary reviews, analyses, blogs, websites, presentations, etc....) is beneficial.

  • Writing consultants should have a good understanding of grammar and mechanics as well.
