About The Position

Instructional student assistant writing consultants conduct one-to-one and group writing conferences with students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines. In these conferences, they function as writing consultants who write with, never for, other writers. In addition, they conduct in-class and Writing Center-hosted writing and peer review workshops and present Writing Center and writing process informational workshops for various classes and other campus programs. Consultants conduct online as well as in person conferences, participate in collaborative mentoring, writing, and professional development activities including reading and discussing writing center scholarship, and contribute to other writing center-related projects as opportunities arise, including resource development, workshop development, and engagement with writers via our website, social media, and events. In addition to their tutoring roles, all consultants keep daily written and online records of consultations, which are aggregated into the Writing Center’s database, they attend professional development meetings, assist students with scheduling appointments and with using the technology needed for working collaboratively with tutors via Zoom or by accessing asynchronous feedback, and participate in quarterly individual and programmatic assessments.

Requirements

  • All instructional student assistant writing tutors must be excellent writers who are able to interact collaboratively with other writers, including undergraduates and graduates in all disciplines, faculty, and staff.
  • Minimum GPA: 2.0
  • Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in providing academic support to a diverse student population

Nice To Haves

  • GPA: 3.3
  • GPA in WI Designated course: 3.7
  • Completed English 3300 – Tutoring Writing: Theory and Practice with a grade of B or better.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct one-to-one writing conferences both in person and online via Zoom.
  • Conduct small group writing conferences with writers working on group projects both in person and online via Zoom.
  • Conduct in-class and Writing Center-hosted writing workshops on a variety of topics.
  • Participate in collaborative mentoring, writing, and professional development activities including reading and discussing writing center scholarship.
  • Maintain accurate records of activities and submit required data and timekeeping records in a timely fashion.
