About The Position

The Trucking team is looking for a dynamic, upbeat, self-motivated Underwriting Manager to work closely with the Specialty Coverages Program Manager in collaboration with the Trucking Assistant Underwriting Manager, to oversee underwriting quality and functions of the Trucking team and achieve the enterprise and program goals. The desired characteristics for this manager are the ability to guide, coach, and mentor team members in a genuine effort to motivate and enhance team engagement and produce positive outcomes for customers and the program. Detailed analysis, organization, and time management skillsets, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills are imperative. Extensive underwriting acumen combined with leadership skillsets would be the best fit for this role. The Trucking Team specializes in underwriting risks in four Workers Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB) trucking classifications (7219, 7198, 7360 and 2727). These risks require thorough analysis and attention to detail. This team underwrites both direct and brokered policies of all premium sizes in all regions. The trucking industry is very robust and unique in its operations, where employment status (independent contractor vs. employee) figures prominently. Under direction of the Program Manager, Specialty Coverages Underwriting, and in compliance with Corporate Underwriting and Corporate Marketing Guidelines and Procedures, the Trucking manager will perform the following management and leadership functions:

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team in fulfilling State Fund's purpose of providing fairly-priced workers' compensation insurance to Specialty Operations customers by performing duties including, but not limited to: a. account management and book of business management, b. account review, referral and approval protocols c. providing guidance to staff and serving as a technical resource d. contributing to special projects
  • Perform the full range duties of a Regional-focused Underwriting Manager dealing with varied, sensitive, complex, analytical and consultative work.
  • Effectively develop staff resources and ensure employee engagement.
  • Be available for outreach meetings with Brokers and Policyholders.
