The candidate will work with Argonne’s Interfacial Mechanics & Materials Group to study tribological performance and failure modes in sliding contacts. Using benchtop tribometers; characterization tools such as optical microscopy and white-light interferometry; in situ X-ray measurements at the Advanced Photon Source (APS); and, when needed, supercomputing resources, the project will track key tribological metrics (e.g., friction evolution) and map surface/subsurface damage and microstructural changes. The candidate will assist with experiments, specimen preparation and characterization, and data processing and reporting, including developing and optimizing Python codes/workflows to automate and accelerate data analysis. Education and Experience Requirements The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: ‒ Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. ‒ Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or ‒ Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution.
