About The Position

This is a position for a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensed in the State of Illinois required to provide professional nursing care to patients and assist medical providers in a traveling mobile unit clinic setting with ability to perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction and supervision of appointed medical provider(s). May also be required to work in clinic office setting or hospital setting at times when mobile unit clinic is not traveling.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed in the State of Illinois as a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practice Nurse and certification must be kept current.
  • Valid Illinois Class D driver’s license or ability to obtain such a license prior to the completion of orientation if person will be operating and driving a GAH courier vehicle instead of traveling on the mobile unit. Must be at least 21 years old and have a safe driving record to operate and drive GAH courier vehicle to different county destinations if applicable. Must maintain insurability on the company insurance policy.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology; medical coding including ICD-9, CPT, & HCPC codes.
  • Minimum of one year work experience in health care. Knowledge of health care field and medical specialty
  • Proficient in mathematics for medications, vital signs, weights, heights, medications, various tests, etc.
  • Ability to recognize, evaluate and solve problems and correct errors.
  • Good communication skills including the ability to speak clearly and concisely to assist patients.
  • Ability to project a pleasant and professional image.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.
  • CPR/AED certificate is required according to the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to type 60wpm (sixty words per minute) or more.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of computer software applications.
  • Trained and/or certified in phlebotomy to perform blood draws.
  • Trained on environmental services needed for mobile unit.

Responsibilities

  • Checks equipment at the beginning and end of each shift to ensure it is in a state of operational readiness.
  • Cleans and sanitizes exam rooms, arranges furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion. Cleans and sanitizes bathroom, nursing station, and all other mobile clinic areas with germicidal commercial grade cleaning solutions and procedures.
  • Dry dusts and wet mops as appropriate to all floored areas.
  • Replenishes supplies of hand soap, hand sanitizer, deodorizers in dispensers and paper products.
  • Vacuums all carpeted areas in mobile unit.
  • Documents on cleaning chart each time mobile unit is cleaned each day mobile unit is in use. Completed cleaning charts are placed in binder and kept on mobile unit for 3 years.
  • Notifies Manager of any necessary repairs needed.
  • Meets scheduled attendance and on-call requirements as needed.
  • Confidentiality is to be maintained at all times.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping room neat, clean, orderly, and proper equipment and supplies readily accessible for type of visit and or procedure.
  • Ensures all locks on cabinets in exam rooms, lab area, sample storage, and vaccination fridge/freezer are unlocked at beginning of mobile clinic open hours and after mobile clinic closing hours and after last patient has left.
  • Courteously greets all patients and visitors.
  • Assesses patient's general condition and takes vital signs and weight.
  • Assists providers with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
  • Provides basic patient care as ordered.
  • Records all activities/interventions, patient/family responses, medication dispensed/prescribed, etc., in the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Assists patients as needed with walking, walking devices, wheelchairs, transfers, undressing instructions, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Interviews patients to obtain medical information.
  • Identifies patient learning needs and provides patient education materials, communicating physician advice/instructions as appropriate.
  • Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines keeping exam and work areas neat, clean, and in orderly fashion.
  • Knowledge of proper use of medical equipment including stethoscope, EKG machine, speculums, scales, blood pressure cuff, and other equipment as applicable.
  • Refills prescriptions as guided by the provider and/or mid-level provider.
  • Demonstrates applied knowledge in areas of patient care resources/references, protocols, pertinent drugs, standards of care, and significant lab values.
  • Must demonstrate current competencies applicable to job position.
  • Contacts medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests and/or admission and/or completes necessary forms requested.
  • Schedules appointments for patients including office, referrals, further testing, etc.
  • Helps answer incoming and outgoing patient telephone calls, triage or page calls, reply or forward electronic patient portal messages ensuring to record all final outcomes of patient calls and correspondence into electronic patient chart.
  • Assists registrar as needed by answering calls, scheduling appointments, greeting patients, opening/closing mobile unit for operation following protocols as needed.
  • Checks over provider’s appointment schedules for organizing patient flow.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests and sample analyses (after receiving proper training from GAH for sign-off)
  • Stocks and checks inventory for medical and lab supplies and reports items for reorder to nurse assistant and/or manager.
  • May assist provider(s) with examination, treatment, handing of instruments and materials and various procedures as needed.
  • Confirms drug refills and or provides prescription information authorized by provider to pharmacies as well as call, print, and fax script(s) to pharmacies as needed.
  • Reviews provider’s dash in electronic medical record software program.
  • Obtains x-ray reports, emergency room notes, hospital notes, etc. as needed for follow-up visits for review by provider before rooming patient etc.
  • Completes various patient forms & requisitions as needed.
  • Sets up medical laboratory equipment and supplies as needed for blood draw(s) and or analysis.
  • Gathers soiled laundry bag when receptacle is full and drops off at GROW location for pick-up. If mobile unit is needing more gowns/sheets before clean laundry arrives, call GAH Laundry @ ext. 2672 for needs and have delivered to GROW for mobile unit to pick-up to restock.
  • Performs venipunctures-only if employee has certification/training.
  • Cleans instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control as instructed by GAH protocols.
  • Collects blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, completes order requisitions and/or other forms for submitting specimens, logs the specimens, and prepares them for testing and either drops off at GROW prior to 4pm or at the hospital if after 4pm.
  • Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets, and provider’s instructions to patients.
  • Ensures all supplies (samples, medication, lab, other medical supplies) are dated and are in range of date and disposes of outdated supplies according to waste disposal protocols. (Only employees who are trained and certified in biohazard waste removal are to access biohazard closet.)
  • Interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests in scope of practice to identify and assess patient’s condition
  • Engages in research activities related to medical office and nursing and shares new information learned to providers and staff.
  • Responsible for following through on delegated duties.
  • Respects & promotes patient rights.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency codes; alerting appropriate staff along with immediate supervisors immediately.
  • Other various duties as assigned by the physician/mid-level practitioner which are subject to change at any given time.
  • Discards all trash in regular trash receptacles including exam rooms and all other mobile unit areas using proper personal protection equipment when handling at end of each working day or if needed before if full.
  • Removes filled biohazard bags as well as removes any full sharps containers to biohazard bin if certified in biohazard waste removal and replaces with new red bags or new approved sharps containers.
  • Checks expirations of any supplies or medications to ensure none are expired.
  • Orders medications for patients from provider orders as well as completes forms for prior authorization and patient assistance programs.
  • Acts as a liaison between patient and provider.
  • Ensures laboratory logs are completed and kept in secure cabinet.
