About The Position

At Road & Rail Services, our Traveling Switchmen are the backbone of our specialized logistics network. This is a role for seasoned rail professionals who thrive on the autonomy of travel and the precision required in complex yard operations. We provide the equipment and the projects; you provide the expertise that ensures every move is executed with FRA-compliant precision. This is a technical position requiring immediate proficiency in switching and terminal operations. As a Traveling Switchman, you will deploy to various industrial facilities and rail yards within our network to lead and execute: Advanced Switching: Independent execution of railcar movements, including coupling/uncoupling and positioning locomotives in diverse industrial environments. Technical Troubleshooting: Immediate identification and on-site resolution of mechanical issues (stuck hand brakes, air hose damage, etc.). Operational Communication: Using industry-standard hand signals and radio protocols to coordinate fluid movements with ground crews and engineers. Regulatory Compliance: Maintaining a 100% "Safety First" posture in strict accordance with FRA regulations and site-specific safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Proven Rail Tenure: This role is reserved for candidates with 2+ years of verifiable experience in rail switching within a yard, terminal, or industrial environment.
  • Operational Readiness: Immediate ability to demonstrate proficiency in lining switches, hanging air, and bleeding cars without basic training.
  • Travel Commitment: Ability and willingness to travel 75% overnight. We are looking for "Road Warriors" who enjoy the variety of different sites and the independence of travel.
  • Physical Capability: High-level physical stamina to climb, bend, and work outdoors in all Southeastern weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Credentials: Valid Driver's License and High School Diploma/GED.

Responsibilities
