About The Position

A Safety Manager is responsible for leading all safety, compliance, and risk management functions within a DOT-regulated transportation operation. This role oversees the company’s Safety Score through the FMCSA SMS portal and other compliance platforms, ensures adherence to DOT regulations, and serves as the first point of contact for accident response, post-accident testing determinations, and insurance reporting. The Safety Manager manages claims involving drivers, employees, and customers, coordinates workers’ compensation matters, develops corrective action plans, and maintains audit-ready driver qualification files. Additionally, this position administers compliance systems such as Foley and Samsara, monitors Hours of Service (HOS), oversees drug and alcohol testing programs, manages state permits (IFTA, NYHUT, OVWP, Oregon, etc.), supports insurance renewals, and leads driver onboarding and offboarding processes including MVR/PSP reviews, orientation, training development, and equipment accountability. Through policy development, safety performance tracking, and continuous regulatory education, the Safety Manager fosters a strong culture of safety while minimizing operational and regulatory risk.

Requirements

  • DOT Safety Manager experience is required.
  • Bachelor's or associate degree is required. Prior training in occupational health and safety, transportation management, or related field is a plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations, including FMCSA guidelines.
  • Strong knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and HOS regulations.
  • Self-motivated and proactive.
  • Experience handling insurance claims and workers’ compensation matters
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience with Samsara and Foley Services.
  • CDL A driving experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and issue safety policies
  • Conduct new driver road tests and safety checklists.
  • Monitor ELD compliance (we utilize Samsara).
  • File overweight, and other necessary permits.
  • Maintain accurate driver files and documentation.
  • Monitor driver performance to ensure compliance with all DOT regulations.
  • Conduct training programs and safety meetings for drivers and staff.
  • Regularly inspect equipment and operations to identify and mitigate hazards.
  • Lead accident and incident investigations, implementing corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate incident records and report to authorities as required.
  • Monitor CSA scores, FMCSA compliance, and Foley scores.
  • Stay updated on transportation safety regulations and ensure company compliance.
  • Pursue relevant certifications (e.g., SmartWay) and other customer-required compliance credentials.
