About The Position

The Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance) is a frontline working lead responsible for directing highway maintenance crews in daily operations and emergency response. This includes snow and ice control, storm cleanup, paving, drainage, and roadside maintenance. The role ensures safe, efficient service delivery across multiple municipalities while maintaining compliance with safety and operational standards. It is essential to sustaining public mobility and infrastructure reliability.

Requirements

  • Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application, or they will not be considered.
  • Candidates invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the tank endorsement, a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC), and copies of their last two performance appraisals, at time of interview, or they will be immediately disqualified.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.
  • Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 20-mile residency from the assigned garage.
  • Two (2) years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of highways.

Nice To Haves

  • VIP experience as a lead and/or secondary inspector.
  • Experience in an acting capacity as a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance).
  • Experience serving as an acting Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader, leading an echelon and overseeing the scheduling and management of snow operations.
  • Experience with setting up sign patterns on highways and secondaries.
  • Experience with crash unit operations.

Responsibilities

  • Plans workflow, determines priorities, schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work.
  • Establishes and maintains crew procedures; provides staff training.
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations.
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units and agencies.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Participates in complex assignments and conducts site inspections.
  • Leads echelon and contractors in snowplowing highways and cleanup operations.
  • Coordinates storm response with crew, including cleanup of downed trees and brush.
  • Approves traffic control patterns.
  • Reviews garage daily reports and assists with scheduling and material ordering.
  • Responds to highway incidents or emergencies (e.g., accidents, emergency repairs, washouts).
  • Serves as lead inspector on contract/vendor projects related to highway maintenance, including milling and paving.
  • Pothole patching.
  • Backfilling slopes for erosion/sediment control.
  • Cleaning/replacing catch basins and pipe culverts.
  • Sweeping or sanding for accidents/spills.
  • Fence/guide rail repair.
  • Litter, debris, and dead animal removal.
  • Repairing milestones or historical sites.
  • Building, equipment, and grounds maintenance.
  • Hauling material and/or equipment.
  • Cleaning rock cuts.
  • Repairing washouts.
  • Sweeping, mowing, and landscaping (plantings, reseeding, chipping, brush cutting, stump removal).
  • Shoulder leveling or lowering high shoulders.
  • Curbing repairs.
  • Drainage preparation for paving projects.
