About The Position

The Highway Crew Leader supervises the county and state crews and will document and report all work performance concerns or related issues to his immediate supervisor. In the absence of the Operations Supervisor, the Crew Leader will assume that role. The Crew Leader will assist in the development of bids and quotes for projects and will be the onsite primary contact for the County, communicating project information with the crew, residents, motorists, suppliers and contractors. This position works under the direction of the Operations Supervisor. Examples of Work Performed: The following duties are typical of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Must have one year paid work experience that includes: Constructing or maintaining roads or bridges: OR Commercial construction building experience; OR Operating varied related farm equipment.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement and without air brake restrictions; OR ability to obtain the required Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and without air brake restrictions within 6 months of hire. Employees failing to meet the CDL requirements will be terminated.
  • A driving record that meets County standards.
  • Must be able to consistently respond within a reasonable amount of time for snow emergencies and other critical needs
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of highway construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate trucks and equipment effectively, safely, and efficiently
  • Ability to accurately calculate and record material quantities and perform legible documentation of various work activities.
  • Skills in reading blueprints and the ability to use this information to complete required construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Skills in operating assigned winter road maintenance equipment.
  • Skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and related software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in problem solving to develop and implement solutions to identified work issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with crew and provide feedback.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to make decisions based on established work procedures.
  • Ability to perform moderately heavy manual work.
  • Ability to recognize equipment in need of maintenance.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work culture that fosters excellent customer service and teamwork.

Nice To Haves

  • A related associate's degree or apprenticeship is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Supervisors with the organization and scheduling of employees, equipment and material needs.
  • Report daily on progress and identify and coordinate the upcoming days/weeks crew size, equipment and material needs.
  • Oversee work to ensure it is done safely, correctly and efficiently.
  • Identify hazards and future Highway Maintenance needs.
  • Help with the development and planning of seasonal work schedules.
  • Communicate with supervisors, Law Enforcement, the public, subcontractors, suppliers, etc.
  • Inspect current construction sites, gather data, and assess project needs.
  • Coordinate, obtain and document utility locates using Diggers Hotline and other resources.
  • In coordination with Operations Supervisors, identify and implement correct Traffic Control procedures and practices.
  • Collect, organize and enter external material tickets and invoices into a computerized inventory system.
  • Monitor and document Departmental internal materials and supplies inventories.
  • Assess and assist in the documentation of accident reports, inappropriate behavior, violation of work rules and Departmental core values with Supervisors and Managers.
  • Maintain documentation of Highway Inspections and reported road conditions on a routine basis.
  • Assess deficiencies and recommend repair methods.
  • Assist Operations Supervisors with performance-based evaluations by providing routine consistent feedback on employee performance.
  • Performs manual labor road construction and maintenance tasks and operates CDL vehicles and heavy equipment.

  • Starting hourly rate of pay is $29.53 + Marathon County benefits
