About The Position

Transportation Engineer II Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation and traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Engineer III Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation and traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Transportation Engineer II Experience: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Transportation Engineer III Experience: 6 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer
  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
  • Statistical analysis methodologies and reporting procedures
  • Industry guidelines, specifications and codes in the production and use of technical plans for the development and delivery of products and services
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in providing recommendations to the Motor Carrier Division for routing of overload vehicles.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements modifications as necessary for continual improvement to existing program of responsibility.
  • Oversees contracts, issues work orders and monitors construction schedules and contractor payments and job progress on construction projects.
  • Oversees maintenance of functional classification of highways and federal aid system map development.
  • Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.
  • Responsible for a pavement management program.
  • Trains engineering staff.
  • Updates, reviews, monitors, and/or reviews requests for changes to plans, manuals and/or standard sheets.
  • Verifies project eligibility and assists with ranking projects and funding.
  • Coordinates maintenance matters with Area Engineers.
  • Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
