About The Position

The job of Transportation Dispatcher is done for the purpose/s of coordinating the assignment of drivers and vehicles; assisting drivers with route changes and in emergency situations; coordinating assigned activities; and responding to the questions and concern of parents, the public and school administration. This job reports to Assistant Supervisor of Transportation.

Requirements

  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; preparing and maintaining accurate records; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: provisions of the Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school students; two way radio communication; and software application.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; and working with frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the maintenance of manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. schedules, field trip lists, district routes, mileage logs, etc.) for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and/or complying with all federal/state/district regulations.
  • Communicates information and instructions to drivers using a two-way radio (e.g. schedules, route changes, vehicle breakdowns, accidents, emergencies, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining busing activities and advising drivers of how to resolve a variety of situations.
  • Compiles a variety of data (e.g. incident reports, inspections, student count, passenger misconduct, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of developing formal reports; conveying information; and complying with mandated requirements.
  • Coordinates the use of district buses by outside groups (e.g. assigning buses and drivers, collecting fees, verifying eligibility, providing policy and use statements, etc.) for the purpose of serving the public while complying with mandated requirements.
  • Dispatches bus drivers and district vehicles for the purpose of meeting schedule demands.
  • Maintains manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. schedules, field trip lists, district routes, mileage logs, etc.) for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and/or complying with all federal/state/district regulations.
  • Performs functions of bus driver for the purpose of meeting student transportation needs.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. incident reports, inspections, student count, state reports, field trip, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Resolves schedule problems (e.g. construction rerouting, substitutes, driver absenteeism, out-of-service vehicles, etc.) for the purpose of revising routes and ensuring that transportation services are not disrupted.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. students, parents, community services, other school personnel, etc.) for the purpose of providing information relating to school boundaries, bus routes, schedules and/or resolving operational problems.
  • Schedules bus drivers, bus routes, summer school transportation, field trips, non-district and Special Education transportation for the purpose of ensuring students are transported in a timely efficient manner.
  • Assists other personnel, as may be required, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
