About The Position

The Transboundary Watershed Coordinator will support the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (Tlingit & Haida) in advancing its work to protect our salmon rivers and the communities they feed. This position will coordinate Tlingit & Haida’s Transboundary Watersheds Project and support collaboration with external partners, including Tribes, federal and state agencies, and local communities. This position will advance the implementation of watershed projects, data management and knowledge-sharing, community engagement, and ensure grant deliverables are met.

Requirements

Knowledge of watershed management, environmental protection, and transboundary natural resource issues affecting Southeast Alaska.
Knowledge of Tribal governance, Tribal environmental priorities, and the role of Tribal governments in natural resource stewardship.
Knowledge of federal grant requirements and program compliance, particularly for environmental or EPA-funded programs.
Skill in coordinating complex projects involving Tribal governments, First Nations, federal and state agencies, contractors, and partner organizations.
Skill in project management, including developing timelines, tracking milestones, and ensuring completion of deliverables.
Skill in organizing and facilitating meetings, workshops, and collaborative discussions with diverse stakeholders.
Skill in preparing reports, presentations, briefing materials, and outreach content for leadership, partners, and community members.
Ability to synthesize scientific information, Indigenous knowledge, and community perspectives into program planning and reporting.
Ability to track program performance measures and support grant reporting, documentation, and compliance requirements.
Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with Tribal citizens, community partners, and interdisciplinary teams while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resource management, fisheries, Indigenous studies, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
2-3 years of experience coordinating programs, projects, or partnerships.
Previous experience and proficiency with GIS, mapping, and data management skills.
Previous experience and familiarity with Southeast Alaska and British Columbia transboundary watershed issues, salmon ecology, and mining impacts.
Maintain a valid passport and willingness to travel as needed.

Nice To Haves

Experience working with Tribal governments, Alaska Native communities, or Indigenous organizations preferred.
Experience supporting grant-funded programs, including reporting, documentation, or project coordination preferred.

Responsibilities

Program Coordination & Implementation
Support the work of Tlingit & Haida’s Transboundary Watershed Grant Project Manager, the Tlingit & Haida Environmental Department, and project contractors.
Coordinate activities funded under the EPA Transboundary Watershed Grant program, ensuring alignment with Tribal priorities and grant requirements.
Develop and maintain a project timeline, track milestones, and prepare progress reports in close coordination with internal and external partners.
Assist in the synthesis of scientific data, Indigenous knowledge, and community perspectives into program outputs.
Coordinate training opportunities for Southeast Alaska Tribal environmental staff.
Stakeholder Engagement & Facilitation
Support coordination efforts between Tlingit & Haida and: Alaska Tribes, Canada First Nations, state, federal, local, and non-governmental partners.
Support the facilitation of workshops, meetings, and consultations to strengthen collaboration and information exchange.
Support Tribal Citizens’ voices and perspectives in watershed planning and management.
Communication & Outreach
Prepare presentations, briefing materials, and outreach content for Tribal leadership, partners, and community members.
Maintain clear and consistent communication channels across project partners.
Support education and awareness efforts related to watershed health, climate resilience, and salmon sustainability.
Monitoring, Research & Reporting
Support contractors in the coordination, collection, and management of watershed data, reports, and maps.
Support integration of Indigenous knowledge with scientific research.
Track performance measures and prepare required grant reports for EPA and Tribal leadership.
Administrative & Grant Support
With support from Tlingit & Haida’s Grants and Finance teams, ensure compliance with all EPA grant requirements, including documentation and reporting.
Assist with budget tracking and procurement related to watershed program activities.
Identify opportunities for additional funding to sustain and expand watershed work.
Other duties as assigned.
