About The Position

Traffic Systems Technician I Performs entry-level work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of traffic systems, communication, illumination and/or data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor. Traffic Systems Technician II Performs routine work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance, and programming of traffic systems, communication, illumination, and/or data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • 1 year of construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, and traffic systems maintenance (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-by-year basis.
  • Some knowledge of Electrical construction procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Proficient skill in Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
  • Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Some skill in Collecting, sorting, and compiling data
  • Communicating technical information effectively
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Ability to Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Work with electricity up to 600 volts
  • Considerable knowledge of Electrical construction procedures
  • Proficient skill in Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps
  • Interpreting applicable information
  • Some skill in Writing, reviewing, and revising documents to include engineering notes, specifications, standards, and procedures
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals

  • Knowledge of electrical devices would be beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in inspecting construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, and maintain traffic related systems/equipment in accordance with plans and specifications and contract requirements.
  • Assists in installing, maintaining, modifying, adjusting, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting and/or repair of electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection, and/or illumination systems.
  • Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
  • Assists in working with other governmental and private entities concerning utilities and rights-of-way.
  • Learns to identify, troubleshoot, problem solve and identify possible new site characteristics.
  • Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Attends meetings with Area Engineers and contractors to resolve problems and implement solutions.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
  • Inspects construction methods, workmanship, and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, maintain, and repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines, and heavy traffic are located.
