About The Position

The Tie-In Foreman oversees all tie-in welding operations on midstream pipeline construction projects. This role is responsible for leading tie-in crews, coordinating with bending, coating, welding, and lowering-in teams, and ensuring all tie-ins meet engineering specifications, safety requirements, and client standards. The Tie-In Foreman reports directly to the Superintendent and works closely with inspectors and project managers to maintain quality, production, and safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years pipeline experience, with at least 3 years supervising tie-in crews.
  • Strong understanding of API 1104, welding procedures (WPS), and NDE requirements.
  • Excellent knowledge of fit-up, alignment, bevel preparation, and difficult tie-in scenarios.
  • Ability to read alignment sheets, isometrics, and engineering documents.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and safety management skills.
  • Ability to work long hours in demanding weather and terrain conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and directs tie-in welders, helpers, labor hands, and operators.
  • Assigns tasks for alignment, fit-up, cleanup, grinding, and prep work.
  • Ensures tie-ins are completed safely and efficiently to maintain project flow.
  • Trains crew members on proper procedures and safe work practices.
  • Reviews alignment sheets, isometric drawings, bend data, and weld maps to plan tie­ in sequence.
  • Coordinates daily with the Welding Foreman, Bending Crew, and Coating Crew to prep tie-in locations.
  • Communicates with operators to dig and shape bell holes correctly for safe access and welding.
  • Ensures all tie-in areas allow for safe welder positioning, venting, and equipment placement.
  • Oversees pipe alignment, gap, high-low adjustment, and bevel conditions before welding.
  • Ensures proper support of pipe using skids, slings, and cribbing for safe tie-in welding.
  • Works closely with welders to maintain heat control, interpass temperatures, and proper sequencing.
  • Confirms all tie-ins meet project specifications, API 1104, and client quality standards.
  • Enforces safe trench entry, bell hole safety, and confined space awareness.
  • Ensures proper shoring, benching, or sloping is in place for welders and helpers.
  • Maintains safe access/egress, ventilation, and no-ignition zones.
  • Participates in JSA meetings and provide task-specific hazard recognition.
  • Ensures tie-ins pass all visual inspection criteria before NDE/X-ray.
  • Works directly with CWI/API inspectors to address any issues immediately.
  • Monitors and document weld numbers, welder IDs, repairs, and acceptance rates.
  • Ensures coating crews have adequate space and conditions to complete field joint coating.
  • Coordinates use of excavation equipment, welding equipment, grinding tools, and vacuum lifts.
  • Ensures tie-in locations have all required tools, wedges, clamps, shims, and consumables.
  • Maintains an organized and safe work area with controlled access around the tie-in.
  • Tracks daily tie-in progress and report production to the Superintendent.
  • Identifies potential delays (terrain, weather, pipe stress, access issues) early.
  • Adjusts crew assignments to maintain required production rates.
  • Assists in planning ahead for upcoming tie-ins to ensure continuous workflow.
  • Serves as the field communication point for tie-in-related issues.
  • Solves alignment challenges, pipe stress issues, or space-limited fit-ups.
  • Coordinates with survey, welding, bending, and lowering-in crews to maintain flow.
  • Communicates clearly with inspectors and project managers regarding readiness and progress.
