Responsibilities include executing a diverse range of complex mechanical operations on components, leading the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of sophisticated rotating power service machinery (including steam turbines, compressors, pumps, and generators), and playing a pivotal role in the rebuild operations of high-value assets. Role Summary: The Test Facility Mechanical Engineering Technician is a hands-on role responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting rotor balancing and test equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality results. The role involves performing mechanical work on heavy equipment and turbomachinery components, including inspection, repair, installation, and adjustment of rotating machinery such as turbines, compressors, blowers, and pump rotors, supporting critical repair and rebuild operations across energy and industrial sectors.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1–3 years of mechanical, maintenance, or automotive experience
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Position is 100% onsite at the GE Repair Center in Richmond, VA
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship
  • Must be flexible to work 1st, 2nd, or rotating shifts, including overtime, weekends, and holidays as business needs require
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role
  • Comfortable working around large rotating equipment, hand tools, propane/acetylene torches, and lifting devices, measuring equipment
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE)

Responsibilities

  • Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety procedures (including Lockout/Tagout); maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area (5S).
  • Quality Control: Inspect and test products and materials to ensure quality and identify defects.
  • Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Set up, operate, monitor, and perform routine maintenance on production equipment.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve equipment and process issues to minimize downtime; escalate complex issues as needed.
  • Documentation & Standards: Complete production, quality, and maintenance records; follow OEM drawings, job travelers, and specifications.
  • Teamwork & Improvement: Collaborate with production, engineering, and quality teams; support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mechanical Assembly: Move, align, assemble, disassemble, and reassemble mechanical and rotating equipment using material-handling tools.
  • General Support: Maintain shop organization and assist with lifting, prep, and basic mechanical tasks as needed.
