About The Position

Seattle University's College of Education seeks a passionate and creative Communications Specialist for our Public Education In Beloved Community Initiative (PEBCI), a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant-funded project. The PEBCI represents a transformative partnership that focuses on responding to the challenges facing public education by building authentic community relationships, especially in addressing the ongoing impacts of the global pandemic and continued attacks on equity and justice work in public schools. The Marketing and Communications Specialist will serve as the primary communications presence, lead storyteller, and digital voice of PEBCI, responsible for crafting compelling narratives that showcase the journey of beloved community building in education and its potential to transform public education writ large. This role requires someone who is deeply passionate about social media, strategic communications, and intentional storytelling that centers the voices of students, families, educators, and communities. This role will be directly supervised by the Executive Director for Research & Program Management and will work collaboratively with the PEBCI PI, PEBCI Faculty Co-PIs, and the Beloved Community Film Documentarian. The Marketing and Communications Specialist will also translate complex research findings and community experiences into accessible, engaging content that inspires action and broader educational transformation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in related field.
  • Current, valid, and unrestricted driver's license.
  • Two (2) years relevant marketing or related experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-platform social media strategy and content creation.
  • Strong visual storytelling skills including basic graphic design, video editing, and photography.
  • Experience with content management systems, social media management tools, and analytics platforms.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with experience in project coordination, database management, and meeting facilitation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to adapt tone and style for diverse audiences.
  • Deep commitment to racial equity, social justice, and educational transformation.
  • Experience working with community-based organizations or educational institutions preferred.

  • Experience in marketing, communications, or public relations in a university system preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead continuous and compelling storytelling initiatives that highlight PEBCI's impact on transformational change within schools and communities across multiple digital platforms.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive social media strategies across platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube) to amplify beloved community stories and educational equity work.
  • Create diverse content formats including video stories, photo essays, infographics, podcasts, blog posts, and interactive multimedia that showcase the authentic voices and experiences of students, families, and communities.
  • Collaborate with the Beloved Community Film Documentarian to integrate documentary footage and visual storytelling into broader communication strategies.
  • Develop, maintain, and update a website that documents, narrates and curates the PEBCI research and community activities.
  • Ensure all communications are grounded and centered in the voices of students, families, and communities, maintaining authenticity and community ownership of their stories.
  • Develop and maintain brand voice, visual identity, and messaging consistency across all PEBCI communications.
  • Build and nurture online communities around beloved community principles and educational equity.
  • Engage with education advocates, policy makers, community leaders, and other stakeholders through strategic digital outreach and relationship building.
  • Facilitate virtual and hybrid community conversations, live-streams, and interactive sessions that connect PEBCI participants with broader audiences.
  • Monitor and respond to community feedback, questions, and engagement across all digital platforms.
  • Collaborate with partner schools and communities to co-create content that authentically represents their beloved community journey.
  • Support the planning and promotion of high-impact events, including the culminating festival that showcases beloved community projects, research findings, and artistic expressions.
  • Develop and share knowledge products including blog posts, newsletters, press releases, and social media campaigns that disseminate lessons learned about beloved community building.
  • Support the dissemination of research activities to foster translation of research findings to practice (e.g., practitioner focused research pieces, website work, possible artistic pieces in concert with student visual artists).
  • Aid in the development and sharing of knowledge products such as research publications, blog posts, presentations and social media insights to disseminate lessons learned.
  • Create communication materials for various audiences including educators, policymakers, funders, and community members.
  • Support the administrative operations of PEBCI including coordinating meetings, managing project calendars, maintaining databases, and assisting with logistical planning for events and community gatherings.
  • Provide administrative support for grant reporting processes, including organizing documentation, coordinating with stakeholders for report preparation, and ensuring timely submission of required materials.
  • Track, analyze, and report on digital engagement metrics, community growth, and communication impact to inform strategy and demonstrate PEBCI's reach and influence.
  • Support grant reporting by providing communication-related data and storytelling elements for Foundation reports.
  • Collaborate with College of Education communications team to align PEBCI messaging with broader institutional goals while maintaining the initiative's unique voice and mission.
  • Assist with administrative coordination between partner schools, community organizations, and Seattle University stakeholders.
