About The Position

As the Temporary Animal Technician, you will monitor the health and welfare of the animals. You will also assist with research needs and maintain the cleanliness of the facilities. Duties include: Assist with the care of animals, including feeding, checking and maintaining the water system, monitoring room ventilation, heating and light intensities where necessary. Clean and disinfect pens, cages, brooders, feeders, floors, walls, fans, and ceilings. Assist in the preparation of buildings for teaching and research use. Adhere to all safety protocols with an understanding of safety techniques and procedures. Maintain a safe working environment to ensure that all protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements. Assist in recording production and research information. We are looking for an individual who enjoys working in a research environment. We need someone interested in agriculture and in working as part of a team.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 1+ years of domestic farm animal handling and livestock husbandry experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of animal health issues.
  • Must demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Must be safety oriented.
  • Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions and be exposed to loud noises, dusty conditions, animal waste and odors.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Be personable, flexible, possess excellent communication and organizational skills and take pride in their work.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours as necessary to accomplish goals consistent with the University’s business needs.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technician Degree, or Animal Technician Certification.
  • Experience working in a research setting.
