POSITION SUMMARY: The Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist is a non-union professional position responsible for the independent coordination, oversight, and execution of pharmacy purchasing, inventory management, and supply chain operations, while exercising functional supervision and administrative oversight of pharmacy technicians as assigned. This role is accountable for technician scheduling coordination, workflow prioritization, timekeeping oversight, compliance monitoring, and serves as a delegated supervisory resource in the absence of the Manager, Pharmacy Automation & Technicians. The position requires the ability to independently manage competing priorities, enforce departmental standards, and make time-sensitive purchasing and inventory decisions aligned with hospital policy, regulatory requirements, and budgetary controls. The Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist oversees medication and pharmaceutical supply procurement, inventory optimization, contract compliance, shortage mitigation, regulatory documentation, and serves as a subject-matter expert for vendors, group purchasing organizations, and internal stakeholders. This role does not provide direct patient care and operates outside of collective bargaining agreements. Position: Technician Supervisor / Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist Department: Pharmacy Schedule: Full time ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES: Supervisory and Administrative Oversight Provides functional supervision and work direction to pharmacy technicians assigned to purchasing, inventory, and inspection activities. Coordinates and prepares monthly pharmacy technician schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage and operational continuity. Serves as authorized back-up approver for Kronos timecards, ensuring policy-compliant payroll processing. Oversees and validates technician completion of monthly clinic medication inspections. Monitors technician productivity and adherence to procedures and escalates issues as appropriate. Provides onboarding, instruction, and ongoing guidance related to purchasing systems and compliance. Purchasing, Inventory, and Supply Chain Management Independently manages pharmacy purchasing operations including purchase orders, invoices, and distribution. Maintains responsibility for inventory optimization, par levels, and expiration reduction. Coordinates responses to shortages, recalls, and emergency supply disruptions. Oversees medication storage compliance across all pharmacy-managed locations. Manages the borrow-and-loan program with external hospitals. Maintains purchasing, inventory, and regulatory records in accordance with audit standards. Compliance, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement Ensures compliance with Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). Maintains records related to the Controlled Substance Ordering System (CSOS). Generates purchasing, inventory, and compliance reports. Participates in committees and performance improvement initiatives. Evaluates workflows and recommends process and technology improvements. Time Management and Independent Judgment Independently prioritizes workload and resolves competing operational demands. Exercises professional judgment in purchasing and inventory decisions. Demonstrates accountability for deadlines and regulatory timelines.
