Requirements

  • Requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree and certification from the NY Department of Education as a Teacher of the Blind or Visually Impaired.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional certification in Orientation & Mobility preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity of others.
  • Assesses student needs and environmental barriers and identifies modifications and adaptations to best deliver instructional activities to actively engage students in meaningful learning experiences.
  • Assist team members in identifying appropriate instructional strategies, materials, and environmental factors that will maximize a student’s visual functioning or maximize adaptive functioning.
  • Prepares paperwork as appropriate for CSEs, CPSES, and other meetings on students with visual impairments.
  • Utilizes appropriate educational techniques and methods suited to student's individual needs.
  • Selects, develops and implements appropriate materials and equipment for therapy and classroom use.
  • Conducts functional vision assessments and learning media assessments in collaboration with member of the multidisciplinary team and produces written reports.
  • Interprets eye/medical reports and shares information with team members.
  • Registers eligible students with the New York State Resource Center for the Visually Impaired.
  • Assists team members in obtaining/accessing resources relative to visual impairment including appropriate curricula and assessments, current research and journal articles, and commercially produced materials.
  • Records, reports and interprets progress of students, making necessary program modifications.
  • Completes progress notes on assigned students.
  • Works and communicates effectively with parents.
  • Creates and maintains a positive and safe environment consisting of the health, medical and safety concerns of the students.
  • Provides training to team members and classroom staff to assist them in carrying out specific techniques with individual students.
  • Acts as a resource to parents and professionals relative to services and organizations that provide services to individuals with visual impairments.
  • Participates in various teacher related meetings and in-service sessions deemed necessary by Superintendent or Principal.
  • Manages student behavior utilizing proactive, positive interventions and implements appropriate behavioral management plans and crisis intervention strategies, as appropriate.
  • Ensures due process rights of students.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
