About The Position

The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 770 students K–12, welcomes candidates for a full-time, one-year position as a Teacher of Art beginning August 2026. Requirements

  • have three or more years of experience teaching art, with an emphasis on teaching advanced drawing and painting
  • have a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or equivalent
  • have substantial knowledge of art history and contemporary art
  • maintain an active studio practice
  • possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • demonstrate a sincere interest in the creative development of young people
  • have a commitment to helping students think independently and develop confidence in their abilities
  • be interested in working collaboratively throughout the entire art program
  • demonstrate cultural competency

Responsibilities

  • teaching a full-time complement of courses in the art curriculum in grades one through twelve; course assignments for this position are primarily in the Middle and Upper School
  • offering an after-school elective in drawing, digital art, or another form of visual expression
  • participating in grade-level team planning meetings with art colleagues
  • assisting all departmental projects: displaying student art throughout the year and in the annual art show; preparing rooms and materials; managing supplies and student artwork; and other projects, as assigned
  • implementing an inclusive, anti-bias, and anti-racist pedagogy
  • contributing to the life of the school and the students outside of the departmen
