About The Position

The Elementary Instructional Coach/Literacy Coordinator serves as a non-evaluative instructional leader and collaborative partner who works alongside classroom teachers to improve student learning and outcomes. This role supports the implementation of core instructional programming aligned with Michigan law, ensuring all students receive high-quality Tier 1 instruction and appropriate intervention through MTSS. The coach provides job-embedded, personalized professional learning through individual and group support, modeling best practices in literacy instruction and effective, research-based strategies. By partnering with teachers, the coach helps expand and refine instructional practices, using data to guide decision-making and respond to the identified needs of both individual educators and the district as a whole. This role is critical in building teacher capacity and advancing district literacy goals.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
  • Minimum of four (4) years of successful elementary teaching experience
  • Completion of LETRS for Teachers
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based literacy practices aligned to the Science of Reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
  • Strong understanding of Michigan’s early literacy law and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
  • Experience using and analyzing literacy assessment data (e.g., universal screeners, diagnostic tools, progress monitoring)
  • Demonstrated leadership and coaching skills with adult learners
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with adult learners
  • Knowledge of research-based instructional strategies that engage all students
  • Commitment to life-long learning

Nice To Haves

  • Master's in MA in Reading and Literacy (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of evidence-based literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading and Michigan literacy requirements
  • Assist teachers in planning and delivering instruction across all literacy domains
  • Provide ongoing, job-embedded coaching cycles (pre-conference, modeling, observation, feedback, reflection)
  • Work positively toward meeting identified district and building improvement goals
  • Design and facilitate professional development focused on literacy instruction and intervention
  • Build teacher capacity in implementing core programming
  • Support onboarding and mentoring of new teachers in literacy best practices
  • Develop training and related ongoing teacher support to develop positive learning environments for students, for example, engagement strategies, including CHAMPS, Thinking Maps, Talk Moves, etc
  • Develop and maintain confidential, collegial relationships with teachers
  • Maintain accurate, detailed records and submit required documentation in a timely manner
  • Conduct himself/herself in a professional manner commensurate with his/her position and projects a positive public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups
  • Grant funded program services supplement and support but do not supplant or replace the general education program of the school district.
