About The Position

Mechanics Bank is currently searching for a Tax Director to join our team. Here at Mechanics Bank, we value connection, partnership, long term relationships and working together in person. This position will be based at our Irvine HQ. The Tax Director oversees and directs all enterprise-wide tax strategy, planning, and compliance. Provide advice and counsel for all tax-related matters. Develops tax strategies to minimize liabilities, ensures compliance with tax laws and regulations, manages tax planning and reporting, coordinates with external auditors and tax authorities, and provides guidance on complex tax issues to support business objectives. Prepare financial statement and regulatory reporting support to Finance for tax matters. Provide tax related support to key decision makers at senior management and operational levels. What you will be doing: Manage financial provisions under ASC 740 including controls testing for publicly traded entities. Review annual and quarterly audited income tax provision and associated income tax footnotes for 10-K and 10-Q filings. Review consolidated and separate federal and multi-state corporate income tax filings. Prepare, review and/or analyze state apportionment schedules. Oversee indirect taxes, including property, sales & use tax, state and local excise taxes, business licenses, etc. Collaborate with internal and external resources related to equity-based compensation, qualified and non-qualified retirement benefit plans to ensure compliance with applicable tax laws and reporting requirements. Manage federal, state and local tax examinations, including correspondence and negotiation with tax authorities. Provide technical assistance for internal resources related to information reporting. Maintain currency with federal, state and local tax legislation and accounting pronouncements. Research and documentation of material tax positions taken and ensure proper reflection in financial statements. Manage and support tax research to identify tax implications of proposed transactions and provide tax advice to business partners.

Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years of Accounting, Financial or Tax experience required. A mix of public and private industry preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience required.
  • 4 Year / Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance is required. Or equivalent work experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of ASC 740 and related pronouncements.
  • Strong experience with ASC 740 for public companies.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations and capability of application in new situations.
  • Knowledge of financial services accounting and tax concepts.
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel.
  • Skill in analyzing processes to determine the potential of automation for greater efficiencies.
  • Ability to work independently and at all levels necessary for successful completion of projects.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with internal and external business partners at all levels.
