About The Position

The mission of the Department of Finance and Administration is to provide Arkansas citizens convenient, effective, and courteous service which will encourage voluntary compliance with tax, license, and child support laws. The Tax Auditor I is an entry-level position responsible for performing routine audits of tax returns and other financial records to ensure compliance with state and federal tax laws and regulations. This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with taxpayers and colleagues. The successful candidate will use auditing techniques to evaluate the accuracy of reported tax liabilities and provide recommendations for adjustments or further investigation. This position requires knowledge of tax laws and auditing principles, and the ability to interpret and apply them effectively within the framework of state regulations.

Requirements

  • Ability to review and interpret complex financial data, identify discrepancies, and draw conclusions based on evidence. A strong aptitude for problem-solving and critical thinking is essential.
  • Ability to carefully review financial documents and records to identify errors, omissions, or inconsistencies. This skill is vital for ensuring accuracy in audit reports and tax assessments.
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business, or a closely related field with a minimum of twelve (12) hours of accounting in accordance with ACA 26-17-203.
  • ONLY COMPLETED APPLICATIONS WITH WORK HISTORY WILL BE ACCEPTED.

  • Veteran Preference:   A copy of a DD-214 must be submitted to the Hiring Official at the time of interview to be considered for Veteran Preference.

Responsibilities

  • Review and examine tax returns, financial statements, and supporting documentation to ensure accurate reporting of tax obligations. Evaluate taxpayer information for completeness and adherence to state tax laws and regulations.
  • Use auditing software and tools to analyze financial data, identifying discrepancies, errors, or potential fraudulent activities. Prepare clear and concise audit reports detailing findings, adjustments, and recommendations.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with taxpayers to clarify audit findings, answer questions, and resolve discrepancies. This may involve written correspondence, phone calls, and in-person meetings.
  • Assess taxpayer compliance with state tax regulations, identifying underreported taxes, and ensuring all necessary adjustments are made to tax filings in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records of audits, including workpapers, correspondence, and findings. Ensure all documentation is compliant with department policies and legal requirements.
  • Work closely with other auditors, supervisors, and managers to ensure effective teamwork, share knowledge, and develop best practices for audits and investigations.
