About The Position

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking systems engineers to help conceive, define, and evaluate system-of-system requirements for operational applications. This role involves transforming ground-breaking concepts into ambitious new capabilities to solve integrated defense problems. The ideal candidate will apply a wide range of modeling, simulation, and analytical tools to enhance understanding of sensor, network, combat system, and missile performance. APL is particularly interested in engineers familiar with digital engineering tools and practices to quickly evolve agile new concepts for rapid deployment to customers. The team fosters a dynamic group culture that values continual improvement, innovation, risk-taking, and the development of high-quality products.

Requirements

  • Have a BS degree in systems engineering, computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, math, or other related technical degree.
  • Have 7+ years of previous related professional systems engineering experience.
  • Possess excellent technical writing and presentation skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff including engineers, scientists, and technicians as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Are able to obtain a/an Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is desired.
  • Experience with writing and using analytical scripts in either MATLAB or Python is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Help design and develop future combat system architectures for our sponsors, addressing the associated requirements and needed interfaces
  • Develop and use analysis tools and scripts that can conduct system-level trade studies and analysis of alternatives
  • Use system models and simulations to design and assess performance of new and emerging capabilities
  • Assess the necessary functional allocations and data flows within systems and between systems
  • Identify, define and mitigate technical risks associated with system designs
  • Create analytical products and effectively communicate technical findings and recommendations to APL leadership, government sponsors, and the engineering community

Benefits

  • Our employees enjoy generous benefits, including a robust education assistance program, unparalleled retirement contributions, and a healthy work/life balance.
  • APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
