About The Position

Provo City is looking for a full-time Utility Electrical Engineer to provide professional engineering work responsible to coordinate, plan, design, estimate, and prepare specifications for building electrical distribution/transmission systems in Provo City's Energy department. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
  • A valid, lawful Driver License is required.
  • Three years of experience at Systems Electrical Engineer I level.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate.
  • Four years of experience at Systems Electrical Engineer II level.
  • State Professional Engineer license is required (State of Utah within one year).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare specifications and perform engineering design for electrical systems, including transmission and distribution lines, substations, and related facilities.
  • Conduct electrical system analyses and studies (load flow, short circuit, load forecasting, relay and fuse coordination, etc.).
  • Review, approve, and maintain complex electrical plans, models, and records, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, codes, and NERC reliability requirements.
  • Oversee updates to electrical maps, as-built drawings, and system documentation.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage assigned capital improvement projects (CIP) to ensure adherence to specifications, timelines, and budgets.
  • Develop detailed project plans, monitor progress, and provide regular status and cost reports.
  • Coordinate with consultants, contractors, utilities, developers, and internal crews to ensure project efficiency and cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain full accountability for project budgets, schedules, staffing, and resources.
  • Recommend and implement system operating procedures.
  • Monitor system performance, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Conduct field inspections, testing, and troubleshooting for operational and power quality issues.
  • Support construction management, inventory, and field operations as needed.
  • Supervise and train assigned personnel, including scheduling, workload management, performance evaluation, and discipline when required.
  • Assist in staffing decisions and may serve as Acting Operations Manager when needed.
  • Participate in departmental strategic planning and recommend projects to enhance system integrity and efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and construction/reliability standards to support consistent project and operational quality.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.
  • Perform related duties and support lower-level staff as required.
