AECOM is seeking a Sustainability Intern to be based in Orange, CA. This position is expected to begin in May/June 2026 and extend throughout the summer. The AECOM Sustainability Internship offers students and recent graduates a hands-on learning experience within a dynamic, fast-paced consulting and advisory practice. This highly competitive program provides leadership exposure, professional development, and skill-building opportunities. The position is part of the High-Performance Buildings and Communities practice area within AECOM’s Advisory Business Line. The internship is structured to give participants the opportunity to work alongside junior staff and senior managers on challenges and opportunities related to sustainable buildings and infrastructure, climate advisory services, decarbonization/energy planning, and performance-led design. Interns will gain experience across a diverse array of projects. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: Performing entry-level work on a variety of assignments designed to develop professional skills, requiring the application of standard techniques and procedures. Following instructions and completing tasks assigned by senior staff. Meeting required schedules while producing high-quality work. Exercising limited judgment on work details and contributing to preliminary methodology decisions. Supporting a broad range of sustainability and high-performance initiatives, including third-party certifications (e.g., LEED, Envision, WELL), sustainability and decarbonization strategy development, compliance research (e.g., CALGreen), energy planning and performance led design efforts, and data analytics or modeling tasks related to building and infrastructure performance. Working alongside team members to collect data, conduct research, organize information, and synthesize findings. Preparing and presenting results and professional recommendations in written reports or presentation formats.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, architecture, building physics, environmental science, climate, sustainability, or a related field, and must have completed at least two years of study. Candidates who have graduated with a bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with green building and infrastructure rating systems (e.g., LEED, Envision, WELL).
  • Understanding of low- and zero c‑arbon building strategies and technologies.
  • Experience with energy modeling and/or daylighting analysis.
  • Currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s or Master’s program, or a recent graduate in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, analyze information, and synthesize technical data into clear written deliverables.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate issues and challenges effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Interest in contributing to a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and research abilities.
  • A genuine passion for sustainability and climate focused‑ work.
