About The Position

The Survivor Representation Project Family Law Attorney plays a critical role in ensuring that victims become survivors by providing quality and trauma-informed full representation, limited scope representation and legal advice in Family Court matters including restraining orders, child support, and custody proceedings. Will work closely with SRP Program Coordinator and FJC Director to ensure SRP provides responsive services to clients.

Requirements

  • Must have a J.D. from an accredited law school and must be licensed to practice law in New Jersey.
  • Must possess excellent advocacy and litigation skills with a knowledge of and sensitivity to the problems of domestic violence, with a minimum of two years experience practicing family law.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft office, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with completing and revising of the SRP Policies and Procedures manual
  • Providing legal representation, limited scope representation and advice, as appropriate, to qualified survivors of domestic violence in Union County Family Court in restraining order, custody and child support proceedings.
  • Coordinating representation, as needed, with the Immigration Attorney
  • Holding twice weekly "office hours" for YWCA clients with legal questions
  • Supervising and assigning work to the Court Advocate/Paralegal
  • Attending regular meetings for all stakeholders in project including internal YWCA team members and external Family Justice Center partners.
  • Becoming familiar with the partners and legal referrals used by the FJC and refer victims as necessary.
  • Documentation: maintain case records for clients, and maintain other records as needed.
  • Participating in monthly project team meetings with the Director of Family Justice Center, weekly FJC meetings and weekly supervision meetings.
  • Assisting with any funder reporting requirements.
  • Attending monthly YWCA staff meetings.
  • Attend quarterly Domestic Violence Working Group meetings.
  • Completing the 40 Hour Domestic Violence training.
  • Attend and participate in community and board of director meetings as needed.
  • Represent the Agency to other organizations as assigned.
  • Represent the YWCA on external committees, as appropriate.
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings on a regular basis
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
