About The Position

The Support System Administrator</b> will support the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) on the legacy system migration and modernization project. This role is responsible for migrating and modernizing end -of -life (EOL) systems, including legacy environments running older versions of Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). The position focuses on upgrading these systems to currently supported operating system versions to ensure improved security, performance, and operational continuity. The candidate will collaborate with cross -functional IT teams, manage system configurations, and maintain documentation throughout the migration lifecycle.

Requirements

  • 8 years of hands -on experience with RHEL and Windows OS upgrades and administration.
  • Background check conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
  • Only local candidates will be considered; must currently live within 50 miles of Austin, Texas

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with RHEL 5/6/7/8/9 and Windows Server (2008–2022) in enterprise environments.
  • Proficiency in system administration for both Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server platforms.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for legacy systems, including RHEL 5/6 and older Windows Server versions.
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible, PowerShell, and SCCM.
  • Proficiency in system automation and scripting using Bash, PowerShell, and Ansible.
  • Strong knowledge of patch management, system hardening, and vulnerability scanning for both Windows and RHEL systems.
  • Experience with backup and recovery solutions for legacy systems.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies, particularly VMware, as the majority of systems are VM -based.
  • Experience implementing STIG -based hardening for RHEL and Windows Server systems, including SELinux configuration, Group Policy settings, and audit log management.
  • Proficiency in running vulnerability scans using tools such as Nessus, OpenVAS, or SCAP scanners, and remediating findings to achieve STIG compliance.
  • Experience automating STIG compliance tasks using OpenSCAP, Ansible, Puppet, or custom scripts.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed assessments of existing EOL systems, including Windows Server (2012 and older) and RHEL (5, 6, 7, and newer), to prioritize migration based on system criticality, security risks, and operational needs.
  • Migrate legacy RHEL 5/6 and older Windows Server systems to supported OS versions (RHEL 8/9, Windows Server 2022/2025), performing reinstallation as the primary method and in -place upgrades only as a last resort.
  • Implement data backup and recovery strategies before, during, and after migration to minimize potential data loss, and validate system functionality post -upgrade through performance checks and compatibility testing.
  • Reconfigure system services and settings following OS upgrades, including networking, storage, and security configurations, utilizing tools such as Ansible and PowerShell to maintain consistency across systems.
  • Perform system hardening tasks on RHEL and Windows Server systems, apply security patches, run vulnerability scans, and ensure compliance with applicable security frameworks including STIG, CIS Benchmarks, and NIST standards.
  • Serve as the escalation point for system issues encountered during migration, providing ongoing post -migration support for Windows Server and RHEL environments to address performance, compatibility, and availability concerns.
  • Maintain detailed migration documentation, update system configuration records and CMDB entries, and provide regular status reports and milestone updates to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with networking, database, application, and other IT teams to ensure seamless integration of migrated systems, and coordinate with third -party vendors as needed for legacy or proprietary software issues.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, PowerShell, and Ansible for repetitive administrative tasks across both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Conduct post -migration audits to verify system functionality, security compliance, and performance, and update disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity for migrated systems.
