About The Position

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible to evaluate, treat, establish a plan of care, and assess therapy programs for patients referred to PM&R for care. Will assist in the development and initiation of new programs and will participate in management decisions. Will be involved in the decision-making process of employing and terminating staff and administering core competencies. Will assist with proposals for new equipment and budget preparation. Will assist in the orientation, supervision, and training of licensed personnel, and other professional and support personnel, as well as students and volunteers. Will conduct annual evaluations of staff in a timely manner. May be assigned to other specialty areas and will be expected to be competent in all areas provided by this Department. Will be expected to take on a leadership role in committees, in which they are involved. Will adhere to policies, procedures and standards of practice as defined by and/or stated by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, DNV, UMC Standard Policy and Procedure manual, and the PM&R Policy and Procedure Manual.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate level program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years clinical experience.
  • Must have discipline specific Texas State license.
  • Must be able to apply the theory of Speech Language Pathology under the respective state and federal bylaws and Code of Ethics.
  • Should speak intelligently and in a professional manner before others, demonstrate good public relations, demonstrate assertiveness, flexibility and tact.
  • Perform technical procedures.
  • Have ability and competency to operate necessary equipment.
  • Must be able to instill confidence in patients, physicians, and personnel.
  • Determine proper procedures and methods of treatment and evaluate results.

  • Adapt to emergency situations.
  • Be alert to changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Demonstrate economic use of time.
  • Know techniques of assisting and handling patients.
  • Must possess a high degree of accuracy in carrying out prescriptions, receiving and translating information, charting and reporting.
  • Demonstrate supervisory and management skills and have ability to delegate tasks as needed.
  • Understand Department/Facility policies/procedures and regulations.
  • Be aware of inter/intradepartmental communication.
  • Must have coordination of sight and body movements in various applications of procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Manage patient scheduling including evaluation and treatment for their specific cost center utilizing the computerized EMR system.
  • Proper and effective utilization, delegation and instruction to licensed personnel, support personnel, and volunteers with approval of Director and/or IP/OP Managers in line with the best use of time and experience of such personnel.
  • Will also function as a Staff Clinician in their respective discipline.
  • Compilation and knowledge of daily and weekly statistics.
  • Assist in selection and retention of qualified candidates to meet the employment needs of the department.
  • Assist in development of new programs and policies/procedures as needed.
  • Initiating progressive disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Completing employee Kronos records.
  • Makes management decisions as deemed necessary by the Director and/or IP/OP Managers.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in evaluation techniques/skills and documentation including:
  • Assessing and establishing a plan of care appropriate to the age of the patient after proper evaluation has been performed
  • Completing proper documentation including evaluation, precautions, contraindications, and placing an individualized plan of care with functional goals in the patient’s medical record within 24 hours of initial contact
  • Completing daily documentation and re-assessments within 24 hours and discharge summaries within 48 hours as described in the PM&R policy and procedure
  • Submission of daily charges as described in the departmental policy and procedure
  • Demonstrates the ability to assess the needs of the patient by:
  • Assessing and documenting the learning needs of the patient/caregiver, and supply the appropriate instructions to the appropriate learner
  • Assessing the need for equipment, attaining an order for it, and demonstrating the proper use of the equipment
  • Assessing and recommending the need for other services and participating in the discharge process.
  • Conferring with person(s) most closely associated with the active management of the patient and keeps them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modification, and/or progress
