About The Position

UPMC Shadyside is hiring a Supervisor to oversee Pharmacy Technicians in our Pharmacy department on a full-time basis! This is a daylight position that will work Monday-Friday with shift times varying depending on the needs of the department. No holiday or weekend requirements, unless needed based on department staffing and/or specific projects/initiatives. The Pharmacy Technicians Supervisor will act as a member of the pharmacy department management team. Other duties include: • Oversight of centralized pharmacy operations: medication preparation, automation dispensing/operations, triage responsibilities, sterile/nonsterile non-hazardous/hazardous medication preparation/compounding per USP, controlled substance accountability, medication delivery workflow/operations, medication inventory/replenishment, and regulatory oversight of audits/inspections. • Accountable for department workflow/operation, on-time delivery, accurate restocking, scheduling/staffing, direct reports performance, inventory counts/expirations, proper handling of returns/waste/destructions, compliance/regulatory readiness, and service recovery. • Focus on new hire training program, staff development/competency programs, process improvement/optimization for central operation, department readiness for compliance and system initiatives. • Handle tasks as assigned to meet the changing needs of patient care, interdepartmental, intradepartmental, and pharmacy services. Position will have direct reports (Mix of Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants) Approximately 80%25 administrative/project/offline and 20%25 staffing/onlineApproximately 80%25 administrative/project/offline and 20%25 staffing/online Additional responsibilities: Oversee the purchasing and inventory control function. Determine drug quantity stock level and ensure adherence to all cost savings initiatives. Ensure compliance with DEA regulations concerning procurement and purchasing of controlled substances. Establish and maintain effective communication mechanisms within the department to ensure information is communicated to and between all departmental and hospital staff. Ensure department compliance with all regulatory requirements including JCAHO, Pennsylvania Department of Health, FDA, DEA, USP, and OSHA. Maintain the department in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations regarding the practice of pharmacy. Assure high quality, accurate, expedient, and complete pharmacy services for centralized and decentralized operations through the supervision of pharmacy personnel. Work to coordinate daily activities of the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Measure the performance of employees and conduct annual performance appraisals. Identify personnel and performance problems and when appropriate. Counsel employees and initiates disciplinary and/or corrective action in conjunction with the Director. Remain abreast of developments in the field through continuing education, professional literature, participation in professional organizations, and communication with peers in other organizations and on staff. In conjunction with Pharmacy Leadership, provide or direct the provision of training and testing necessary to ensure competency of employees and skills maintenance, and maintain all pertinent documents as required. Recognize employee potential and proficiency and facilitate personal and professional growth. Participate in the development of policy and procedures for the department and provides the direct supervision necessary to ensure adherence to such. Ensure patient safety through ensuring appropriate staffing so that pharmacy department continually provides optimum pharmaceutical care; adjusts staffing schedule as necessary to account for employee sick time, leaves, vacations, etc., and/or periods of high patient census. Prepare, implement, and monitor the capital and operating fiscal budgets. Coordinate or perform all pharmacy scheduling activities to assure adequate coverage to provide quality and efficient pharmacy operational services. Oversee the packaging, labeling, and distribution of medications for all patients according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Continuously evaluate policies and procedures and is alert to opportunities to improve the quality and extent of pharmacy services.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician, 2 of which should be in a leadership capacity.
  • Analytical/problem solving ability necessary to participate in the development of department procedures and goals.
  • Ability to work independently as well as ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner to manage multiple projects.
  • Personal computer skills.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required
