About The Position

Oversees and coordinates the daily operations of the Specimen Grossing and Mortuary Services, in collaboration with the Medical Director and the Laboratory Manager to provide high-quality, cost-effective patient care.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Pathologists' Assistant and ASCP certification (Required) or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited training program for Pathologists’ Assistant or in a biological science (prior to 2005) and ASCP certification. (Required)
  • 5+ years as a Pathologist Assistant (Required)
  • Leadership experience in Anatomic Pathology (Required proficiency)
  • Experience working in mortuary science (Required proficiency)
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy; microsurgical techniques; pathologic disease processes; understanding of safety and infection control requirements of position. (Required proficiency)
  • Skills in obtaining/preparing tissue for evaluation; written and verbal communication, computer operation, organization, prioritizing, problem solving, time management, decision making. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to provide assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner; use and maintain pathology equipment appropriately; utilize good judgment; prepare and maintain records, use electronic communications tools and software. (Required proficiency)
  • Must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills, and be team oriented to drive innovation in the space. (Required proficiency)
  • Pathologist Assistant (PA-ASCP) (Required Upon Hire)

Responsibilities

  • Develops and mentors staff including but not limited to providing feedback, encouraging growth, and fostering training and education opportunities to ensure highest level of patient care.
  • Responsible for competency assessment of personnel in assigned area.
  • Oversees laboratory compliance with all regulatory agencies by established standards in collaboration with the manager.
  • Identifies strategies for the accurate and timely performance of high complexity testing in accordance with regulatory guidelines. Assist with enterprise level effort standardization, centralization and optimization of anatomic pathology.
  • Monitors quality assurance of personnel and established laboratory processes.
  • Ensures the effective and efficient allocation of resources.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with patients, clients, coworkers, and staff and encourages a team culture.
  • Evaluates data for trends in productivity using LIS resources such as AP dashboard, and works with the Medical Director to develop productivity thresholds and determine current and future staffing needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
